I am looking for any information on my ggreat grandfather, Patrick Egan, born in 1809 county Leitrim. His father was James Egan and his mother or step mother was Catherine Donely. He might have lived near or in Drumshanbo in "the one street village of Leitrim. (Bord Failte Ireland Guide 4th ed. 2001)
The name "Drumshanbo" is part of the scant "place inheritance" we have received. We thought it was a parish but I keep seeing it called a townland. Apparently there are at least 2 towns named "Drumshanbo" in Leitrim.
Family lore says that Patrick left Ireland around 1830 and went to New Orleans for a time, where an Uncle had an apothocary in the French Quarter. If any of this seems familiar to you, please respond to this inquiry. I'd like to find out more about Patrick's life and family of origin in Leitrim.
Sincerely, Jane McGarvey

Hi Jane,
Thank you for your message.
You are correct, there are two Drumshanbos in Leitrim; one is a townland which is the smallest division of land in Ireland-it can sometimes refer to only a field or two. The other is a town. Both the town and the townland are in Kiltoghert civil parish.
A useful website when it comes to Irish place names is:http://www.logainm.ie/Viewer.aspx?text=Drumshanbo&streets=yes&listText=Drumshanbo
Also check http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/Irish-land-divisions.html for more information on Irish land divisions.
I suggest that you join the Kiltoghert parish page and post your message there. Here is a link to the page:
