Hello,

I am trying to trace a family that lived in the Township of Tiknock in the 1760s. This family had at least two daughters:

Joanna, born approx. in 1761 + Catherine, born approx. in 1767.

I am trying to identify Joanna's parents in a definite manner: they may be James Murphy and Bridget Keogh (approx. spelling).

I am also trying to establish the family link of these girls to Miles Murphy of the same parish, born in 1747 and married to Margaret Nowland. Uncle, cousin??

Joanna Murphy married Patrick Culleton (alt sp: Culliton, born approx in 1760, Co. Wexford). The couple may have lived in Olygate Parish. They had several children before emigrating to Quebec:

Mary Ann (b.1795), Dennis (b.1798), Bridget (b.1804), John (b.1806), Margaret (b.1808). Some of the first names were "francizied": Brigitte and Marguerite.

Any information, help or suggestions where to look would be greatly appreciated! Many Thanks!

  • I also have Murphy ancestors that I'm trying to trace.  I have a Miles Murphy and Margaret Nowlan in my tree that immigrated to Canada.  I believe that Miles Murphy was a brother to Mary Murphy (my ancestor) married to Michael Donahue.  If you are a member of Ancestry.com, you'll be able to find out quite a bit of Canadian information.  For instance, I found the burial record for Patrick Culleton (he died in 1849) and also the marriage record of Bridget Culleton who married Andrew Murphy (son of John Murphy and Mary Crowley) in 1825.

I also have Keough's in my tree, but she was married to a Walsh.

The Canadian information is easy to find (another good source is framptonirish.com), but it's difficult to trace these familes before they left Ireland.

  • Hi Joan!

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond. I have already done extensive work on the Canadian side of the family's history, having traced the children's relevant marriage and burial records (except for Joanna's). This is how I found Catherine, Joanna's sister. Although linked closely to the "Frampton Irish", Joanna and Patrick (and some of their descendents) settled to farm in the L'Ancienne-Lorette and St Gabriel de Valcartier region of Quebec, so this task was not so easy. Although Ancestry.com can be very helpful, much of the info listed on some trees is just plain mistakes that keep being copied from tree to tree - which is very easy to understand, since common Irish names from the period seem to repeat ;-)

I am now concentrating on Irish genealogical ressources to settle some of the lingering questions - especially related to Joanna and Catherine's parents and their actual family link(s) to the families that were directly affected by the events at Oulart Hill & Vinegar Hill and their aftermath in the 1798 Rebellion. So many families left all at once that the effect on the Townland of Tiknock and surrounds would have been profound. Given the reprisals that came, I wouldn't be surprised if most documents pertaining to these families would no longer exist in Ireland...

  • I can give you access to my ancestry tree, if you would like.

I think you'll find this interesting:  I have a letter from a great aunt nee Murphy.  She states, "Pa's uncle once removed (a priest) was war killed by the English, beheaded".  I've always wondered if this man was Fr. John Murphy from the 1798 Rebellion.   My father's family has Murphy's on both the maternal and paternal side and I wouldn't be surprised if somewhere down the line they are connected as they were both from Wexford.  I just don't have any proof.

  • Thanks Joan!

I'll follow this up in the summer, when I'll next have some time to devote to this.

    Cheers!

  • I was just reading through some old papers and found this blog from the www.framptonirish.com website.  The blog is dated Feb 06, 2009 and the title is "Wexford Map Analysis".  In the article Dennis McLean states, ..."Patrick Devereux was married to Mary Culleton who was the daughter of Johanna Murphy and niece of Peter Murphy.  Johanna Murphy and Peter Murphy are suspected to be children of Miles Murphy."

  • My husband is one of their many descendants and I was so excited to find your info!  This led me to find that not only did Joanna and Patrick emigrate to Quebec, but so did Joannas parents who are James Murphy and Bridget Keough.  I found this by accident in the baptism/marriage/death records for St. Gabriel-de-Valcartier Catholic church in Quebec.

If you have found anything about who Patricks parents where I would love to find out.

It's amazing to find so many relatives for my husband who was raised an only child and didn't know his Culleton cousins.
