Hi,

Have been trying to find info on John Devereux and Maria Lowe who married at Kiltennel Church on 25th November 1839. They were  listed as of the parish but John was a postman on the I.O.M. I believe that John was born in 1811 in the Diocese of Ossory. I have no info other than this but suspect that John came home to marry. His wife was Maria Lowe and her father Stephen was a witness on the marriage docs.

Hopefully some kind person can help.

Best regards

  • Rob:

Some additional info. There are only six RC parishes for Co. Wexford online at this time and Kiltennell (actually Ballygarrett is the RC parish)  is not one of the six. Later this summer the National Library of Ireland plans to place the RC parish registers online for free searching. You can review records for Ballygarrett at that time. Ballygarrett records start in 1828, however, I would tell you that most parish registers have gaps for the intervening years where records were lost.

You mention that John was born in the Diocese of Ossory. The boundaries for Ossory diocese may have changed since 1811 but currently Ossory is mainly in Co. Kilkenny and parts of Laois and Offaly.

Have lots of info on Maria, she was born in Cuckney, Nottingham.

  • Hi Rob

The Tithe Applotments (free online http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/) have 77  Devereux records in Wexford including 14 Johns in the years 1825, 26 & 33. Kiltennel doesn't get a mention in the parishes listed of course & try as I might I couldn't link any of the townlands of the John D's records to Kiltennell.

Kiltennell is mentioned in the parish list on Griffiths Valuation 1848-64 but there are no Devereux there!

No Devereux appear in the Irish Censuses until 1901 - 479 in Wexford (Kiltennell not listed)

There is a tree on ancestry owned by EdwardMurphyAmprior which has the same birth & marriage info as you but the tree is private so might be worth getting in touch if it's not you or you haven't aready done so. If you don't have access I can send him a message with your contact email if you wish.

Last throw of the dice was irishgenealogy,ie/ (free site)

  • Cheers Col,

As I thought, more than one John Devereux. It seems John travelled to Kiltennel to get married. He is of the Parish but I guess could just have had family there and just been staying temporarily.

Have been in toch with Edward Murphy and we both share John and Maria as 3 times grand parents.

I will just have to keep digging.

    Regards

    Rob
