Hello, and thanks in advance for any help; I am brand new to this site and just by the looks of the Message board, I am hopeful that this may be the site I've been looking for!
I am researching Simon Roche (Roach); he is a big brick wall but I do have a tidbit. I have the marriage record between him and Catherine Frances Caulfield, on Feb. 8, 1834 in Ferns, New Ross. As noted in Ireland, Selections of Catholic Parish Marriages & Banns, 1742-1884.
I am hoping to determine Simon's date and location of birth, hopefully his parents' names.
I know that he left Ireland with his wife Catherine and their 3 young children (Martin Edward, Thomas and Catherine) in approximately 1833; I found this date of immigration in a newspaper obituary so it could be off by a few years. I can't find them on ships' lists. I have birth records connecting Simon and his wife to their children.
I know that they settled in Ontario, Canada and I have lots of documentation about that. Anything at all would be so appreciated!!

Jane: I searched on the subscription site FindMyPast and the marriage was actually held in Ballycullane (Tintern) which is in southwest Co. Wexford. Records for that parish start in September 1827 so if either Simon or Catherine were baptized in that parish, records would no longer be available. I located baptismal records for four children in Ballycullane (Tintern) so likely one died young Martin 1835 Catherine 1836 Thomas 1838 John 1841 Family would have left after 1841. I did not find a Simon Roche baptismal record in any parish in Co. Wexford that would have been a good lead. I did find a Catherine Caulfield baptized May 11 1817 in Adamstown RC parish which borders Ballycullane. Father was John Caulfield and mother Catherin Roache. Not sure if this is your Catherine since she would have been short of 17 when she married which is possible. Have you considered DNA testing? Roger McDonnell

Hi Roger, thank you so much for the very quick response! Could you please advise if FindMyPast would be a more accurate site than the Parish Registers? I don't have that subscription site so I don't know their accuracy. It's very interesting that there was another child, John it would be. And the date of immigration is different than the newspaper obit, but I was beginning to doubt if the newspaper would be accurate as it is probably just taking verbal information from the family members. This is very helpful and I appreciate it so much; I have some work to do!

Jane: The benefit of subscription sites like FindMyPast or Roots Ireland is that their search routines cover all parishes in a county and are particularly helpful when you don't know the parish. For example, based on your first message, I would have searched only in New Ross parish. With FindMyPast, I searched for all records in Wexford, With the parish registers, you have to tediously search thru a register which may not be in very good shape and some are in Latin. I don't know if you have other families of interest in other counties. Normally, Roots Ireland is preferable (in my opinion). There are a few counties (Wexford, Clare, Fermanagh) where Roots Ireland has incomplete records. Roger
