I would like to find the Parish where Joanna Murphy was born, 1761, Tiknock.  Has that parish been merged with another one?

  • It could be Tinnock which is in the Gorey area or Horewood parish which is the Campile area

  • Thanks for your information.  I searched (Find my parish) and couldn't find a parish listed in Wexford under neither Tinnock or Horewood...  Any more help you can give me?

  • Tiknock is located not far from Oulart, on the road from Oulart to Enniscorthy. The parish was Kilcormick, I think.

I too am looking for either birth or marriage information for Johanna Murphy (alternative name: Joanna Murphy), born about 1761. Parents unnown.

Johanna Murphy emigrated with many families from Oulart and the surrounding areas, following the aftermath of the Battle at Vinegar Hill and the release of prisoners taken during the 1798 Rebellion. Relations of Joanna Murphy include Miles (uncle?) and Peter Murphy, who lived in the same parish and farmed near Oulart Hill. Miles and Thomas Murphy appeared on several "state" prisoners lists, including one from around 1800 for Kilmainham Jail in Dublin.

Most of the families emigrated to Canada, likely after the 1804-1806 release of several of these "state" prisoners. About 30 families chartered a brig to take then to America, where they eventually settled near Quebec City. It is believed that this was the result of being forced to leave Ireland within two months of the prisoners' release. Joanna and Patrick had been unable to travel at the time, maybe due to the imminent/recent birth of a child.

Johanne Murphy married Patrick Culliton (spelling variation: Culleton). Patrick listed his place of birth as Wexford (about 1765).

Children born to the union: Mary Ann (?Jane) born in 1795, Dennis born in 1798, Brigitte (variation Bridget) in 1804, John in 1806, Marguerite (variation Margaret) in 1808. The family may have spent time in Pas-de-Calais, France. The family eventually managed to emigrate to Quebec sometime before 1820.

There is clearly a family link between Joanna Murphy, Miles and Thomas Murphy, but I cannot find it. Members of both families were signatories to the marriage of one of Joanna's daughters in Quebec.

Any help or suggestion of a trail to follow would be greatly appreciated - especially in locating Joanna Murphy's birth certificate or marriage record. Many thanks!
