Tobias Stafford son of Tobias Stafford and Bridget Waters listed his place of birth as County Wexford.  He travelled on the ship Maria to Canada in 1818 and became a farmer in Lanark County, Ontario, Canada.  In Canada in 1824 he married  Elizabeth McGarry, daughter of John McGarry and Mary Tone who had come from County Westmeath, Mullingar Parish.  Tobias Stafford had a large family of 12 and one of his sons  Father Michael Stafford travelled to Belfast as part of a mission.  He was known as the Apostle of Temperance. There is no record of any of the other family members travelling back to Ireland.    I have been searching to find the missing link back to County Wexford for many years and am very hopeful that there may be a family in Ireland who has been looking for Tobias since he left County Wexford.  I have completed much of the genealogical records on the descendants of Tobias for the past six generations and would like to share this with the folks he left behind.

This is probably a very long bow to draw but it just might be helpful to you.

My MURPHY ancestors also came from County Wexford (in my case, to Australia) and I have obtained an extract from the Baptism Register (see details below) in the catholic parish church of Mayglass, in the combined Mayglass-Ballymore Paris, Diocese of Ferns, County Wexford. One of the sponsors to the baptism was a James STAFFORD!

The baptism occurred on 14 Nov 1841 - well after your Tobias STAFFORD emigrated to Canada - but it is just possible that his family also was from the Mayglass area of County Wexford.  Mayglass still exists and can be located on current maps of County Wexford.

    [Source:

'Birth and Baptismal Certificate' for  William James MURPHY, being an extract from the Register of Baptisms of the combined parish Church of Mayglass and Ballymore, County Wexford. It was provided on 29 Sep 1987 by Rev Nicholas Doyle PP at Ballymore. It reads:

'Diocese of Ferns Parish of Ballymore/Mayglass

On examination of the Register of Baptisms of above Parish I certify that according to it William James MURPHY, East (sic) Bog, Mayglass, was born on … day of …, and was baptised according to the Rites of the Catholic Church on 14th day of November 1841 in the Church of Ballymore by the Rev., ….

    Parents Dennis MURPHY

    Jane WHEELICK

    Sponsors James STAFFORD

    Mary DILLON']

One other matter that I should mention is that some residents of County Wexford migrated to Argentina and it is possible that some STAAFFORDs went there.

  • Hello Jack

Thanks very  much for your search for Tobias Stafford.  I appreciate your help.

It's been difficult over the years trying to do research at a distance particularly since there don't seem to be that many records from the early times when he was born in the late 1700s.

Tobias drew an 'X' for his name on his will before he died so we know that he was not an educated man as he could not write his own signature.

From the many Canadian census records he was about 30 years old when he came to Canada and so was born around 1786.

Can you think of any records in County Wexford that go back as far as 1786 that you could suggest I try?

    Thanks again for your help!

  • My name is Billy Stafford and I live in south County Wexford. I have researched Staffords in Wexford and I know I have relations in Canada. All Staffords in Wexford have a common ancestery. He arrived in Wexford in 1169 from England during the Norman invasion of Wexford. The Staffords lived in Stafford Castle UK having arrived there in 1066 during the Norman invasion of England from France. The family name in France was de Tosny. If you google Ralph de Tosny you will see all the history.
To get back to Tobias, it is not a name associated with Wexford Staffords that I have come accross so far. I have my direct family tree going back to 1400's any Tobias does not appear any where in it. Stafford is a common name in Wexford and there are loads of records so it should be possible to find him in now digital parish records.
Hope this is of some help.
    Cheers Billy.

  • Hi Billy:  Iam the son of Walter Stafford, who was the son of Michael Stafford.  All my father's relatives on my side of the tree have passed away. In January ,2021, I started searching my family tree and was stuck.  My dad always said he was from County Cork but i couldn't confirm that but on a trip to Southern Ireland in 2017, I found references in Wexford county.

The link I was missing was the name of the Stafford who left Ireland to come to Canada but I think your reference to Tobias Stafford might be my great great grandfather.  It seems that every generation of Staffords from Tobias until today, have the name Michael somewhere. In my case, my older son is Brendan Michael..

If i have any questions about the Stafford family, would it be ok if I contacted you from time to time?

    Thank you,

    Doug Stafford

  • Hi, I feel a bit like a lurker here, since I have no Stafford connection. However, my Redmond great-great grandparents from northern Cty Wexford also migrated to Canada in the same time frame. The book Irish Needles about the Irish immigrants to Frampton, near Quebec City, features family genealogies and includes Patrick Stafford and family. Patrick was born 1797 in Wexford, married Elizabeth Cardiff and later Mary O'Connor of Kilmuckridge (my ancestors' stomping grounds). Three kids were born in Quebec, including John, b 1836, who married Ann Walsh and had 7 kids in Quebec. The notes name a cousin Patrick Bearny, and that Patrick was a shoemaker, then a baker, and bought land with a Thomas Doyle.

I have no idea if Patrick and gang fit into your picture, but it seems worth sending out the info.
