Elizabeth Freeman who married William Hughes in St. John's Newfoundland on 25 Jan 1817 - "William Huse of the Parish of Cloneen, Co. Kilkenny to Ellebeth Freeman, Parish of Rofs (Ross), Co. Wexford. Present Charles Culleton and Anty Glendon." I would appreciate and information and help confirming this information. Kelly M. Smith

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
It will be very difficult to try to confirm info on a 1817 marriage in Canada. What was the religious denomination of the couple? I'm not familiar with a Cloneen parish (civil or RC) in Kilkenny.

Hi Roger,
Thanks for your reply. The information about their marriage in Newfoundland I have been able to see the record first hand and can vailidate. They were Roman Catholic and it reads exactly as "William Huse of the Parish of Clooneen, Co. Kilkenny..." I see on-line there is a Cloneen which is a townland in Clogh ED, in Castlecomer Civil Parish, Barony, Co Kilkenny so maybe it was recorded incorrectly. I am trying to link some children to William Hughes and Elizabeth (Betsey) Freeman of Ross. I have found Baptismal Records for James, 7 May 1820; Mary, 16 September 1822; Michael, 21 August 1824 and Elizabeth 18 December 1827 and as luck would have it my 2x Great Grandftaher John Hughes was born somewhere between 1824-1826 (based on ages on censuses and marriage record) but the Baptismal Records at the Bascilia in St. John's is missing all of 1826 which is likely the year he was born and fits nicely in if the rest of the baptismal dates noted above are correct. In his Massachsetts Marriage Record in 1860 to Mary Brophy, has her place of birth listed only as "Ireland" and daughter of Denis Brophy and Mary Unknown and William, listed as born in "NFLD" son of William Hughes and Betsey Unknown. The only William Hughes and Betsey I can find are these but of course I need to be sure.
let me know your thoughts or any ideas you might have.
Regards,
Kelly

There was a Catholic Chapel in the townland adjacent to Cloneen, in Moneenroe - see here (1st Ed. OSI). Maybe he gave the location of the nearest chapel instead of the name of his parish ?
Both townlands are in Castlecomer Civil parish, Catholic parish is also Castlecomer or Castlecomer & Clogh
EDIT: A slightly later OSI map shows the Chapel as 'Cloneen R.C.C.'

The Castlecomer RC baptismal records http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0981 start in 1812. There is a gap between 1818 and 1828. However, no record would be available for William who was likely born before 1800.
I did check the 1823 Tithe records for the parish and there were six Hughes records likely relatives to William.
