Looking for any infomation on Butlers from The Faythe Wexford I suspect that there is a link between the Butlers from The Faythe Wexford and those Butlers living in Maudlintown. I have some information and am willing to share.

Other related surnames are

Deveraux

Cullen

  • Dear Peter

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in answering your message.

Have you already looked at the sites below for further information on the Butlers?

    www.familysearch.org

    www.rootsireland.ie (a subscription site)

Do you have a time/date in mind? The start date for parish records varies depending on the parish. Some parish record begin much earlier than others.

Thank you for your message, yes I have used both of the above sites I have a number of Butlers from the Faythe and Maudlintown the problem is understanding the realationship between them before the 1901 cencus. Many of the Faythe and Maudlintown Butlers were Master Mariners so I have the  Mariners records which have been a great help. I am trying to establish that a Laurence Butler, Ships Master, born 1798 is the father of Ambrose Butler, also a Ships Master.

  • Morning Peter

I'm afraid the only way to try to sort out those kinds of relationships is to gather as much infromation as possible, particularly about the wider family  - siblings, sponsors and witnesses. By doing so you will make it earsier on yourself in the long run and may find a new source or new infromation that will link it all together.

That was the purpose of my original posting you never know, somone who married into the Butlers or a Butler married into thier family may have knowledge of the relationships. I have three seperate family trees for the Faythe\Maundlintown Butlers I am sure that they are linked as the chirstian names and occupations are the same they even serve on the same ships.

it is disapointing when I find a Church marriage record and the parents names have not been recorded. I know my Co Loais Butlers are related to Wexford Butlers as we have a DNA match.

  • I know Peter, it can be very frustrating. Some people take a break for a while and come back fresh with a new perspective. I think your method of information gathering will ultimately yield results, it's just a question of gathering and gathering and having a think about potential links. Ancestry.com are holding some very good 'webinars' about Irish records on their site if you are interested.

I have been involved in Genealogy for 30+ years one of the things I have learnt is to cast a wide net, you never know what is going to turn up, about six months ago I made contact with a 1st cousin I made more progress on my Irish tree in 6 weeks than I had done in the last 15 years.
