My great great grandfather, Peter Burtchell, arrived in America in 1842 with his father, David (b. 20 Apr 1812, Diocese of Ossory, Leinster Province) and mother, Jane (nee Walpole) (b. approx. 1809, Diocese of Ossory, Leinster Province; d. 18 Nov. 1893, Bath Beach, Brooklyn, NY).

Peter was born 20 Feb. 1841 in Ireland.  On 9 May 1864 he married Maria Cecilia Gerard (b. Dec 1840 New Orleans, LA; d. 22 Sep 1910, Brooklyn, NY).  They had children:

Clara Cecile (b. 3 Feb. 1867)

Marion (b. 20 Apr 1869)

Walter David Burtchell, Sr (my great grandfather) (b. 11 Nov 1872)

Josephine A. (b. 15 Sep. 1875)

George Gerard (b. 27 Apr 1877)

Arthur (b. 1 Mar 1881)

William (b. 1 Mar 1882)

Jane Frances (Jennie) (b. 13 Apr 1884)

Emma (b. approx. Mar 1887)

Peter owned a saloon on Benson Avenue and Bay 19th Street in Brooklyn.  Prior to that he was a patternmaker.  He was a Freemason.  He d. 14 Dec 1913 in Newark, NJ of a stroke.

I have a lot more information about Peter's descendants.

  • Hi catcha,

Welcome to IrelandXO. Do you have any more info on where the Burtchell family lived in Ireland or their religion? There are two dioceses of Ossory in Ireland - the Roman Catholic, and the Church of Ireland (Anglican/Episcopalian). And they cover somewhat differeant areas although they do overlap. Any more info would help.

  • Dear Patrick -

Thank you for writing.  I honestly don't know whether they were Catholic or Church of Ireland.  It's  my understanding that they hailed from Graiguenamanagh, County Kilkenny.

    Regards,

    Cathy

  • Cathy, Have you tried RootsIreland.ie? They have a large database of church baptisms and marriages for most counties of Ireland and they have a good range of records for Co Kilkenny. I was searching for something else and found these extracted baptismal records for the Graignamanagh RC Parish

  • Honora Gore (Kilkenny) married James Moore of Burgage Mor, Blessington.  Honora's father was Henry Gore, land Agent in Blessington till he died  in 1843 in Blessington.  Her mother was a Mary Alcock. They orginally came from Kilkenny. Honora Gore was Church of Ireland before she married James Moore, a Catholic.  They are my GG Grand parents.

If anyone has any information, especially Church Records, on James and Honora Moore and their life in Blessington, and as to the burial place of Henry Gore (there is a plaque erected in his memory in the Protestant Church in Blessington) I would be very grateful.

    Many thanks

  • While researching my Family,  I came across a Burtchaell Family in Burgage More, Blessington, Co Wicklow, orginally from Brandondale, Co Kilkenny, c. 1700-1840.ASLCT.  They may be related to the Gore Family orginally from Kilkenny also.  Henry Gore and his family moved to Blessington Co Wicklow and he was the Land Agent to the Marquiss of Downshire and died in 1845.  I would be very interested in the connection between these two families!.  I hope this will be of some help to you.

    Kind regards
