In 1777 Richard Hopkins c1750 was granted a lease on 197 acres based on "his life".

This expired with his death in May of 1834.

Has anyone access to Cantwell's Memorials to the Dead?    I think Cantwell may have mis-transcribed age 84 as age 87.

Richard had a son Richard c1790? who was granted 76 acres of that lease after his father died.

In 1821 I think this was the Richard Hopkins who married Elizabeth Leybourne at Aghold, indicating he was of Ballard but a member of Carnew Parish.

In 1815 at Carnew Parish a Richard Hopkins and wife Susan baptized a son John , born Oct 29 1814.

In 1818, a Susan Hopkins was buried at Carnew, age 24.

I believe that this was Richard's wife and that he later married Elizabeth Leybourne.

Can anyone confirm my speculations or add any information?

  • Thank you so much!!!

My notes say Richard Hopkins of Ballard was buried at Mullinacuff My 7 1834...source Mullinacuff Register...no age given

He was age 76 in 1827 so  age 83 or 84 at death in 1834

The note you enclosed was probably a Cantwell transcription of an illegible tombstone so the date and age (87) are questionable.

    Wife Mary

    was 61 in 1827 = born c1761

Cantwell has 1853 at age 73 but Mullinacuff Reg has 1835  which is likely more accurate than an illegible tombstone or a typo of 1853 for 1835?

    Daughter Mary

was buried Oct 7 1835 at age 40 ,,,Aghold Register

Did transcriber of Cantwell again type 1853 instead of 1835?

I hope this helps rather than hinders!!!

    Richard Hopkins of Ballard

Ballard. Rich Hopkins given lease of 197 a(cres?) in 1777. Expired with his death 5/5/1834. His son Rich had sublet 76 a(cres?). Balance kept by Richard Sr.. There are 2 daughters also..1 married Wm Hopkins a relative. He was to take possession of the farm and pay 100 pds to keep the other sister. However, the wife died and another brother who had inherited another farm in Carlow Co. came and forcibly took possession, keeping William out. The 100 pds was returned to William, and the land taken by the Earl and subdivided into small plots for townspeople. Richard kept his 76 a plus 12.?
