Hi: My great Grandfather Simon Louth and Grandmother Susan Murray Louth lived in Kilmagig, Avoca when they were married. There is no sign of him on the 1911 census when my grandmother (aged 7) and her brother (aged 5) were living with their widowed mother. Would you have any information on him or a suggestion as to where I should look for information, please? I would greatly appreciate any help at all. Thanks so much in advance.

Hi Linda, thanks for your message.
Do you have any other information on Simon such as his date of birth etc? The more information that you post the better, in terms of our volunteers being able to help.
There are few places that you can search for information yourself.
You can check the land records that were carried out in Ireland during the 1800s. Seen as no census records prior to 1901 exist these are a good substitute. You can narrow down which one you should be searching in if you can find some date relating to Simon. The first is the Tithe Applotment Books which date from 1823 to 1838. You can do a search of these here:
http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
The second is the Griffith's Valuation which dates from 1848 to 1864. This can be found at the following link:

Have you tried looking at Church records? Most Catholic records are held locally. One website which may be of use to you is the Irishtimes website. This allows you to check what records are available for specific counties. To see what records are available in Avoca parish follow this link:
For Church of Ireland Records you can check http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/
Some other websites that you may found useful while doing your research are the National Library and the National Archives of Ireland found at http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Archives website is particularly useful and gives some very good tips for researching your family tree.
I hope some of these links are of benefit to you. Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,
