I am looking for any information about the parents of Margaret Hannan/Hannon who came to Port Phillip, Victoria on the Eliza Caroline in 1850.  She emigrated under Earl Grey's Pauper Migration scheme which dealt mainly with teenage girls from destitute circumstances, often orphaned. Subsequent birth records about her children said she was born in Co Wicklow but her immigration information says she was from Hacketstown, Co Carlow and aged 16.

Subsequent newspaper items indicate that her mother remarried somebody White/Whyte and had 2 more boys, so her father presumably died young.  Her mother was stated on her 1853 Melbourne marriage documents to be Eliza and father Matthew Hannon, a farmer. She also gave her age then as 21 but that may have been a ruse to allow her to marry without parental permission.

There is no indication that she had any other living siblings when she left Ireland.

Any suggestions would be appreciated,

Ric

I had a look on www.rootsireland.ie and there are 4 marriages records for a Matthew Hannon in the years 1828, 1829, 1832 and 1833. As this is a subscription site I am limited in what I can see. It might be a good idea to have a look and see if you can rule these records in or out. I couldn?t locate a baptism for Margaret for the correct period. At a recent conference in Portumna Workhouse, a speaker talked about the Early Grey Scheme and work being done to record the details of girls who were sent out as part of the Scheme. If you get in touch with the Workhouse they could pass along the contact details of the two people from Australia working on this: info@irishworkhousecentre.ie

The details of Margaret's baptism from rootsireland are:

    4 Feb 1838 Arish Rathdrum  C of I

Her address  Ballinacor parents Thomas Hannon labourer & Jane.

There is a marriage of Thomas Hannon farmer to Jane Collins in Rathdrum 1833 but their parents' names are not on the record!
