looking for the family of Louis/ Lewis Burns born 1804 in Wicklow, son of Patrick/ John / or Matthew Burns. Lewis emigrated to Canada & married Mary Ann Wallace in 1830 in what is now Eastern Ontario. A family member (brother?) is Patrick John Burns, married Amelia Astleford, daughter of Samuel Astleford, also from Wicklow.

any information on the Burns (possiby spelt Byrnes) would be much appreciated!

Other family we are looking for is George McFadden, born1832 in County Wicklow. George married Amelia Jackson, daughter of Edward L Jackson. George & Amelia had 13 children, the first born was Edward D Jackson, born in Ireland.

Edward L Jackson was born 1790, died 1867 in county Wicklow. He was married to Hannah Green & then married Rachel Astleford. Edward L died in Ireland, his wife (Rachel) & 5 children emigrated to the Ottawa area in 1867. Rachel was heading for a brother already settled in the Ottawa (then known as Bytown) area in Canada.

  • Hi Donna thanks for your message.

Do you know the name of the parish that the Burns/McFaddens/Jacksons lived in? Civil registration in Ireland didn't begin until 1864. So prior to this all information collected is in the church registers. Most of these are held locally so you need to know the name of a parish to know which registers to check.

Do you know much about their emigration? Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival rather than that of departure. Consequently, immigration records may be a good place to find information-and perhaps even an exact place of origin. For immigration records in Canada check the National Library and Archives of Canada at: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/index-e.html

You could also try doing a search in either the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838 or Griffith's Valuation (1848-1864). These were land survesys that were carried out in Ireland. Perhaps if they are in these you may get a parish name or even a townland/village name. You can search these here:

Some other websites which may help are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/

The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm

I hope this helps. If you find any more information remember to post it as the more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Kind regards,
