I recently posted a message on the Calary parish page because I knew that several generations of my Sutton ancestors had lived there from at least 1750 until 1821.  This information was found in the Delgany Church of Ireland parish records.  The last entry was for the baptism of my great great grandfather Henry’s first child Elizabeth, in 1821.

Eight more children were born during the next 17 years.  However, I realize that the Calary parish was not established until 1831, so assuming that the family did not move too far away, I’m wondering what other parishes were close to this area at the time.

Hickson Willows has been mentioned as a possible birth place but I have not found a location for this.  Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Jill

  • Hi Jill,

Do you have information on Sutton families who lived in the Calary area? The mother of my great grandfather was Ellen Sutton who married William Fox. I know he lived in the Calary area and was born around 1790. I have contact with a Christopher Fox who still lives in the area and may know the answer to your question.

  • Hi Ian,

Thanks for your reply.  I'm sure all the Suttons in the area must have been related in some way.  My great grandfather had a sister Ella, but not yours I'm afraid.  I have been able to trace my ancestry from Samuel b.1725 through his son John b.1765 and Henry b.1795.  It's Henry's family I'm trying to track between 1821 and 1852 when they emigrated.

I have all the children of these families as well as those of Samuel's eldest son Anthony b.1756.  Do you have Ella's parents?

I'm having difficulty working out what the surrounding parishes would have been and whether their records have been published in some form.  If your Fox contact could help with this information I would be gratelful.

Have you seen the Delgany Parish records?  There are lots of Foxes!

    Regards,

    Jill

  • Hi Jill,

I don't have any other leads for close by parishes as yet. Christopher Fox said that Ellen Sutton's parents were Samuel and Mary. The nearest I can find in the Delgany Parish records for this couple is Eleanor, born 1795. There seems to be so much duplication of names that it is hard to be sure who is who e.g. in the Delgany records, between 1783 and 1798 there were four William Foxes who had a son called William. I'm also finding that there seem to be names missing from these records. I'll ask Christopher if he has any thoughts on this.

    Regards,

    Ian

  • Hi Jill,

If my guess is correct, I had an ancestor Samuel (b 1761) who was the brother of John. Christopher Fox informed me that Ellen Sutton was short for Eleanor Sutton and her parents were Samuel and Mary. As I mentioned previously, the Delgany church records show Eleanor born to this couple in 1795. Checking the Samuel Suttons, the best fit is with Samuel, baptism 1761 who had a brother John baptism 1765. The mother of John and Samuel was Eleanor. The only uncertainty is that Samuel (b 1761) was Ellen Sutton's grandfather.

Christopher Fox said that there are names missing from the church recortds as there was no obligation for names to be registered so sometimes births or baptisms were not recorded.

  • Hi again Jill,

Looking on Ancestry, I see that the family tree that fits your Sutton family is missing Samuel b 1761. Delgany records show that he was also born to Samuel and Eleanor.
