Hello,

I am tracking my great-grandfather Patrick Michael Cosgrove who was born 17 March 1863 I believe in Wicklow. He emigrated to Philadelphia in 1878 and married in 1885 to Winifred Fleming from Ballycurraugh, Wicklow. He had 2 sisters Mary & Sarah for sure, they both emigrated and joined him in Philadelphia (he may have had third sister Catherine). Sarah's death certificate lists Wicklow, so I assume Patrick was born there also...don't know the Parish or Townland however.

His father was also Patrick Cosgrove and his mother was O'Brien either Ellen or Catherine, this data comes from Mary, Sarah's & Patrick's death certificates.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated, I have done a lot of seaching of on-line resources and come up with nothing firm. Ideally, I would like to find Patrick's (born 1863) birth or baptism record; I believe they were all Roman Catholic

Thanks very much

  • Hello again Dan!

I searched on Roots Ireland and did not find any baptismal records in Co. Wicklow for children of Pat Cosgrove with a wife with the maiden name O'Brien. When I expanded to all of Ireland, the only records were for the 1840s in Co. Limerick.

Since civil registration started in 1864, do you know if Mary or Sarah were born 1864 or later. Possibly we can find a civil record on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie

  • Hi again Roger,

Mary and Sarah Cosgrove were both older than their brother Michael according to their death certificates, they were both born in 1853. Sarah's death certificate did say she was from Wicklow; Michael's and Mary's just said Ireland.

A lot of my Irish ancestors were born before 1864 so I am aware of the lack of records before then.

Thanks again for your time and effort.
