Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I located a transcription of Richard's baptismal record. His mother was listed as Sarah no last name. Father was a lawyer. Family lived in Corballis which is in Rathdrum civil parish.
I looked at the 1911 census. There were 29 people names Mates but only one was in Ratdrum-- a John who was a 73 year old farm labourer.http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Wicklow/Rathdrum/Drumdanga…
The online Irish phone book https://www.eirphonebook.ie/ only shows three Mates records but none in Rathdrum. Use the Residential TAB
Have you considered an autosomal DNA test?

Sorry but no mates in mt Rathdrum family. Nowlen, Nolen, Farrell, with I think connections to Byrnes.

Hello Sue Wood, I notice you state you have Nolan & Farrell families with perhaps a connection to Byrnes. The Baptisms of my Connor relatives have Nolan, Farrell, Byrnes as sponsors, their mother being Bridget Byrne and father being Michael Connor. Does any of this gel with you? Bridget.

To Roger McDonnell,
My great grandfather Richard Robert Mates left Ireland for the United States on 5 Jul 1849 and his father Peter Mates may have left about 1860.
Yes, I have done 6 autosomal DNA tests (Family Tree DNA, 23 and Me DNA, Ancestry DNA, Living DNA, My Heritage DNA, and GPS Origins DNA). I'm also a member of the Meates and Variations Project (world wide) with Family Tree DNA.
Thanks for Richard's baptismal record, but I already had that. Thanks also for the 1911 Census and the link to the irish Phone Book.
