I am looking for information on James Broderick who was married to Ellen Hughes born abt: 1831 might have died 1915. They lived in Johnstown, Co Kilkenny. Two of their daughters immigrated to the US and they were:

Mary Ellen Broderick born: 6 Dec 1860  and

Margaret Elizabeth Broderick born: 3 Dec 1869

Looking to connect with anyone from this line or who may have information on James & Ellen and their other children. James was a Tailor.

  • Hi there. If I'm not mistaken, I am part of the family of Mary Ellen. I live in the US with other Broderick's that are front Kilkenny originally. You can email me at jcsock55@gmail.com if you'd like to chat!

  • I think records prior to Thomas Broderick and Mary Reade of Johnstown were lost. The other townlands did better on record keeping during the era of confederacy. It is the cousins living in stable regions that gives some evidence to establish which family is which.

    Lewis, William Paul

    5 Jan 1820 - Urlingford, Kilkenny, Ireland

29 Oct 1887 - Baltimore, Maryland, United States

Lewis family later found in Whitegate

    Lewis, James Thomas

15 June 1854 - Gathabawn (Whitegate), County Kilkenny, Ireland

10 November 1912 - Baltimore County, Maryland, USA

Simple to find that James and Ellen Hughes Broderick emmigrated to the Bronx but not so simple to get past the missing records; I have gotten back to 1760 and have rough sketch of Broderick families but is not perfect by any means. Our Brodericks did live in Baltimore and had some communication also with Kilkenny most of which is lost. The Lewis and Brodericks had common ground in occupation.

I have one theory where Tobins are part of a possible network Johnstown and Roscommon. Where the Tobin sisters are helping their families gain opportunities in the states.

    From the Tobin family tree:

    https://ancestry.com/family-tree/tree/11839753/family?cfpid=112315410791

John Byrne Sr has a son who is found in Manchester, New Hampshire operating a cotton mill.

The census page shows all these family members from ireland end up working at a cotton mill is more than a coincidence. The idea here is finding which Tobin you are related. We are related to Bridget Tobin and she had sisters, possibly where the Broderic name was carried. also James Broderick (tailor) lived in  Roscommon B 1830

  • From the above post now including another Byrne whose occupation is cotton mill,

I think there are more families from Kilkenny that worked in the woolen mill also made clothing.

As the industrial revolution caused changes in farming. During off season the families found work

mining and rail road construction in Castlecomer, west Meath,  Roscommon.
