Hello Christie Cuniff,

You are probably aware of most of the information I have posted below:

My Grand Father was the son of Michael Redden of  Clonkelagh and Bridget Penders of Ballynakill. My Great Grand Father was a local farmer and had seven children Mary1877, Patrick Francis 1882, Thomas Patrick 1883, John Michael 1886, Michael 1888, Mary Bridget 1891, and Edward (Ned) 1895. My Grand Father John Michael emmigrated in 1908 to New York and was preceeded by Patrick Francis 1905 and Thomas Patrick 1906. Mary the oldest appears to have died at a young age no details presently available. Patrick died in 1918 from the Spanish Flu in NYC. Thomas died in 1916 causes unknown.John Michael died of cancer in 1941 in Bronx, New York. Michael left Ballynakill and eventually settle in Skerries, He died 1959. Mary Bridget had an untimely death and I am looking for details on her demise. Edward inherited the farm and his daughter in law still lives in the family home. Edward died in Ballynaill on the 14 March 1967.

I am trying to gleen information on the family members that remained in Ireland and any documentation to verify the family records. Are their parish records for the family members I mentioned and information pointing back to Thomas Pender Bridget's father and Thomad Reddin Michael's father. Thomas Pender is posted in Griffith's valuation and I already have the 1901 and 1911 Census information plus some civil rgistrations.

  • Hi Fred,

I will look up the parish records available to me. The Redden family are all buried in Clonfert, but alas there are no burial records for that graveyard. I still have the material you sent me in the past prior to your computers virus attack. Have you managed to recover those documents or do you wish me to forward them to you. My email address is still chriscun@eircom.net so if you email me with your new address I will send on the material.

Have you considered coming to Ireland for the Week of Welcomes next June? I promise you that it is a really great week and that you will thoroughly enjoy yourself. We will treat you to a great time following up on your ancestral heritage.

    Regards,

    Christy Cunniffe

  • Hi Christie,

A trip to Ireland was not in the cards this year, my cousin Jack Redden was all set to go with a trip  during the week of welcomes but alas he did not get enough people to form a group this year. The economy here is bad but not as bad as the Irish economy these days may be next year. We were going to use the Skerries branch of the family as the transportation company They run a family tour service from Dublin started by my Grand Uncle Michael Redden.

As far as the documents I lost everything even the back up hard drive was compromised so I will email you my new Email address

    Thanks

    Fred

  • Hi Fred, I hope this message finds you well.

My name is Martina Redden and I have reason to believe that my great-grandfather John Redden (of Ballinakill) and your great-grandfather Michael Redden (of Conkelagh) may have been brothers. Both men are listed in the 1901 Census aged 32 and 40 respectively.

I was wondering if you have found any other documentary evidence to support this theory? My father Michael Anthony Redden has vague memories of visiting relations in Ballinakill as a small child. He was born in 1950. Interestingly I have a brother also named Michael Redden b. 1984 now aged 28 years. In addition my father's cousin is also named Michael Redden, who is an ordained priest and has spent most of his life living and working in Atlanta, Georgia!

We are one of the last 2 surviving Redden families still living in the area. My parents moved to Galway city in the 70's where we now live.

I hope you have found some of this information of interest.

Best of luck on your search!

    Kind regard,

    Martina Redden

  • Hello Martina,

I hope this day finds you in good health. Sorry for getting back to you so late but I have not looked at this website for a couple of weeks.

There may be a connection, let us see if there is a link

My Great- Grandfather Michael was married in Eyrecourt on April 12, 1875 to Bridget Pender or Penders. On the civil registration it lists Thomas Reddin as his father. from family sources I learned his mother was Mary Huband and Mary Redden is one of the witnesses. This is presently the earliest document that I have for my Great-Grandfather. I am waiting for Christie Cunniff to send me some of the documents she accumulated since my computer crashed last year. Christie also said she would check the parish records for what ever she might find. Now the spellings of Redden or Reddin seemed to be interchangeable. I have two cousins in Skeeries one whom spells his name Redden and the other Reddin.

One of Micheal's decentants inherited the family farm from his father Edward (Ned). He was John Joe Redden and his widow still lives there. Unfortunately she is not computer literate.  Christie is a neighbor.

On my grand father"s (John Michael Redden) Civil Birth registration the witness was listed as a Bridget Redden

I posted a picture of my Great Grandfather on the Parish website see if there is a family resemblence

Let me know if any of these names match your file.

My Grandfaher and two of his brothers (Thomas Patrick and Patrick Francis) emmigrated to New York 1904 to 1910, Edward known as Ned remained in Ballinakill and Michael eventually settled in Skerries, Dublin. Mary Bridget seems to have had an untimely death and there is some question that my Grand Father might have taken some actions that might have forced him to leave Ireland (Family Rumor). He did however arrive in New York using his brothers name. I still have not found any military records for him because he would have had to register for conscription for WWI and WWII. I also have not been able to find his naturalization papers.

Here are the names of the family members that lived in Ballinakill in 1950 see if any of the names might be familiar.to your Dad.

    Father Ned Redden

    Mother Ellen Comerford Redden

    Children

    Patrick Redden

    John Joe Redden

    Eamon Redden

    Philip Redden

    Cheers

  • Martina,

There may be a stronger connection here. In a recent posting I received from Christie Cunniffe, She clarified my Great Grandfathers birth place as Clonkela which was Muingbaum by the 1901 Census. The same information that you have provided form the 1911 abd 1901 Cesus

By the way Fred I may have discovered the Clonkelagh where members of your own family came from. I told you in the past that I thought that it may have been a corruption of Clonkeagh a townland in Clonfert parish beside Ballinakill where the Reddens live today. However, I now believe it may in fact be in the parish of Tiranascragh as there is a place there known as Clonkela in which a Redden family still resides. If you go to the Tiranascragh page at www.irelandxo.com and speak to Pat Madden the parish administrator. He may be able to make the contact that you need. Clonkela was more than likely a townland at an earlier stage that has through time become obscure and is now what we term a local place-name within another townland Muingbaun. The Redden family is named as residing at house No 12 in the 1901 census and house No 6 in the 1911 census in the townland of Muingbaun

If your father stayed in Ballinakill in 1950 he would have been visiting John Joseph Redden. The home is on the road to Banagher and Johns Widow still lives there.

    Regards

    Fred

I received a response from Pat Madden:

    Hi Fred.

I was delighted to get your enquiry and have good news for you.Its definitely the same family. I have spoken to Annie Farrell who now lives in Kill in Tiernascragh Parish. She was born Redden. and gave me some lovely doccuments which I will email toyou privately. Meanwhile look up the Irish census for 1901 and 1911 for Muingbaun in Co. Galway and see the Redden returns. They are the same family. The townland of Muingbaun is even today known locally as "Clonkela".

Expect a more detailed reply soon. Please do become a member of our Tiernascragh page on this website.

    Pat Madden.

I will gladly share this information with Martina Privately when I receive them but I am going to need her e-mail address

    Thanks for all your help

  • To Pat Madden or whom ever is now the parish Co-Ordinator,

I am once again trying to follow up on the previous posting and there was a response from a woman named Martina Redden  I believe who now lives in Galway City that said she was also looking for Reddens from Clonkelagh or Clonkela ,

Since my last contact the Irish Government has release the GRO Records to the internet for research,

Here is what I have found:

First I know my great grand father was born in Clonela he is the son of Thomas Reddin and Mary Huband. They were married in the Laurencetown Roman Catholic Churh on 15th of January 1842.

    From what I have now gathered from documents made available from thr GRO i have gathered the following;

From the 1901 Census of Ireland there is only one Redden family living in  Clonkela these family members are as follows

    Residence Date:    31 Mar 1901
    Townland/Street:    Muingbaun
    District:    Kilquain
    County:    Galway
    Household Members:
    Name    Age
John Redden    32 John born 1869 married Mary Hall, 5 May 1895, Eyrecourt Chapel, Eyrecort, Portumna (St. Brendan's?)
Mary Redden    26  Born 13 JUN 1874 • Banagher, Kings, Ireland
Thomas Peter Redden    5  Born 27 May 1896 in Clonkalegh, Eyrecourt,Portumna Galway
Michael Redden    3  Born 18 Apr 1898 Clonkela  Eyrecourt,Portumna, Galway
Mary Kate Redden    2  Born 18 Apr 1899 Clonkela  Eyrecourt,Portumna, Galway

Then in the 1911 Irish Census it shows the following

    Townland/Street:    Muingbaun
    District:    Kilquain
    County:    Galway
    Household Members:
    Name    Age
John Redden    44    See Above Comments from 1901
Mary Redden    37    See Above Comments from 1901
Thomas Redden    14  See Above Comments from 1901
Michael Redden    12  See Above Comments from 1901
Mary Kate Redden    11  See Above Comments from 1901
Annie Elizabeth Redden    9 Born 6 Jul 1901 Clonkela  Eyrecourt,Portumna, Galway
Norah Frances Redden    7  Born 5 Jun 1903 Clonkela  Eyrecourt,Portumna, Galway
Ellen Margaret Redden    6  Born 8 May 1904  Tiernascragh, Portumna, Galway, Ireland
Bridget Agnes Redden    5  Born  28 Aug 1906 Clonkela  Eyrecourt,Portumna, Galway
John Redden    1  Born 15 May 1909 Clonkela  Eyrecourt,Portumna, Galway

From the Civil Marriage registration of John Redden to Mary Hall 5 May 1895 John's Father is listed as Thomas Redden  Farmer See link to document Below

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_re…

Based on that record and the knowledge that Micheal Redden of Ballynakil (my great grandfather) was born in Clonkela) is that they have to be brothers. Michael was born between 1855-1860 so there would be no Civil Record of his birth.

In checking the Parish Records for  Killimore and Tiranascragh I do not see either John or Michaels' Baptism Registration. I did find a Baptism dated 6 April 1856 for a Micahel Redden son of Thomas Redden and Margaret Mahor but this does not agree with the Marriage certificate I have for Thomas

Potential Marriages of John Redden's Children:

Annie Elizabeth Reddin to John Carroll 9 Aug 1939 Killinior, Eyrecourt, Portunna, Ireland

Norah Frances Reddin Dec 1931 to Peter Conway Portunna, Ireland

    Possible Death Registrations:

John Redden Sr.  18 May 1945 in Killinior, Eyrecourt, Portunna, Ireland

Thomas Peter Redden 2 Sep 1947 in Ballychrisane, Portunna, Ireland

Please respond with anything additional you might be able to give me

  • Martina Redden aka Reddenmartina @irelandxo.com

You onde asked me if I had any socumentation on the Reddeneds fron Clonklea. With the release of the Civil Registration record, the Irish Parish Registers and taking a second look at the family of John Redden in the 1901 and 1911 Census I have found the following documents

The first document attached is the Marriage Registration for Thomas Reddin and Mary Maher dated 19 Mar 1846 from Killimore and Tiranascragh

The second Document is the baptismal Registration for John Redden 27 Jun 1861 from Killimore and Tiranascragh, Parents are  Thomas Reddin and Mary Maher

The Third document is the marriage of John Redden and Mary Hall 5 May 1895 Eyrecourt, Eyrecourt, Portumna Galway civil registration

The forth document is the baptismal record for Micheal Redden 6 Apr 1865  from Killimore and Tiranascragh, Parents are  Thomas Reddin and Mary Maher

I do have many other documents to share with you inregard to John's family from Clonklea and based on what I am sending you now it does appear that John and Michael were indeed brothers. My ID is my email address so you can respond to me directly
