My great great grandmother was Mary DOOLEY b c1826 and her father was Edward O'DOOLEY b c 1780.  Mary Dooley came to Western  Australia on board an Irish Bride-ship in 1852. It was renowned that these bride-ships carried destitute girls from orphanages or poorhouses during the Great Famine.  Many of the girls on board this ship were from Galway and it was rumoured that several other girl cousins came to the same part of Australia, some by the name of SCANLAN.  It was also rumoured that our Mary had 9 brothers whom emigrated to the US or perhaps Canada.  Father Edward was listed as a White Smith, but we have since been told he was probably a tinker after the Irish were forcibly removed from their land.

We know Mary's father Edward had a brother Lawrence DOOLEY b c 1796 whom married a Margaret LARKIN.  Lawrence is recorded as a cattle dealer from Galway.  Lawrence's son Martin, married a girl, whose father was from Mt Bellew in Co Galway.  There is also a record of a Lawrence Dooley owning some land in Springlawn, Galway, but we cannot ascertain if this record pertains to our Lawrence.  Lawrence and his wife and most of his children emigrated to Derbyshire, England between 1851 and 1861.  Daughter Bridget remained and married (to Michael GAVIN) in Ireland while the remainder of the family went to England and some of the children later to the US.  The children of Lawrence Dooley and Margaret LARKIN were: Bridget (married Michael GAVIN, son Martin), Patrick, Martin (married Maria HESTER, daughter of Patrick), Mary (married Daniel CONCANNON), Thomas, Lawrence, Catherine (married Peter MURPHY) and William Riley Dooley (married Bridget BURKE).  Lawrence Dooley died in England in the early 1870’s.

By 1891, daughter Catherine Murphy (nee Dooley) was widowed and living in Mt Carmel, Pennsylvania; Bridget remained in Ireland, Patrick was living in the western states of the U.S., Martin and William were living in Mt Carmel and Thomas and Lawrence were reportedly living close by.  We believe Mary remained in England.

  • Query – did your research identify any other siblings of Mary’s father Edward Dooley?  I think he may have had a sister Catherine.  A Catherine Dooley and her husband John Niland also emigrated to Derbyshire, around 1850, living in the parish of Clay Lane in the 1851 census.  They later moved to Durham but in the 1881 census John Niland had returned to Derbyshire and was boarding with Thomas Dooley, the son of Lawrence Dooley, again at Clay Lane.  John had left his wife in Durham, she was recorded in the census as “Wife of miner out of employment” so presumably he had gone back to Derbyshire looking for work and boarded with relatives – possibly Catherine’s nephew.  I am descended from Catherine Dooley and John Niland.
