Hello There
Many thanks for your email. I will source what information I can for you. We have a list of the passengers for the period. I will also forward this to the Killure volunteers, and they will source what information they can for you.
Will be in touch.

Hello Henry
Please see attached a list of passengers that left Galway for Quebec on the Ship Sea Bird on June 15th 1848.
We are just in the process of setting up a project in the Ahascragh/Killure parishes, of tracing residents that left that area of Irvillioughter in 1848/49.
Regards
Paula

I am a descendant of Catherine and Henry Dempsey listed on the recently posted list of passengers aboard the Sea Bird. Their child, Michael, listed there was my great-grandfather. I have extensive information on this branch of the Dempsey family who settled in Pittston, Pennsylvania and worked in the mines. I would be interested in any information on the other Dempseys in this sailing, presumming they are relatives. My Dempseys were part of the forced emigration from Irvilloughter and I would like to know more about this estate.

I'm a direct descendant of Henry and Catherine, through their child John. I have information on John's direct line.

Glad to hear from you, Maggie. I would love to share information with you. John was my gr-grandfather Michael's brother and they lived near each other in Pittston. One big question I have is if you know anything about what happened to their father, Henry? I am assuming he died soon after they arrived in US. I too am in the US, in Maryland. Where are you?

I know the family stayed in Quebec for a very short time (per John Dempsey's obit) before moving to Pittston. By census records, Henry died shortly after arrival but I don't know if in Quebec or PA. I am in Michigan, would love to see Michael's lineage.

Hi Paula. Hi Henry.
My ancestor was Bridget Kennedy, who traveled to Quebec on the Sea Bird and is listed above. I just found a source on Ancestry.com, which has a great article on the emigration initiative. It is: New World Immigrants, Volume II: “State-Aided Emigration Schemes from Crown Estates in Ireland c. 1850” by Eilish Ellis, Analecta Hibernica, XXII (1960), pages 331-394. Article found in New World Immigrants: A Consolidation of Ship Passenger Lists and Associated Data from Periodical Literature, Volume II. edited by Tepper. Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, MD, 1979.
My questions are:
- Do you have any information on Bridget's family?
- Where exactly would the Irvilloughter Estate, Asherach, Galway lie? Is there anyplace I can visit during my impending trip to Ireland?
With best regards,
-
Maggie, you mention having John Dempsey's obit and it mentions they stayed in Quebec awhile while immigrating. Could you post a copy of it; I thought I had determined that the particular sailing they were on from Ireland came to NYC. evienaranjo@gmail.com

Hi Rob
Irvilloughter is a townland in the parish of Ahascragh. In the late 1840s some of the residents of the area were paid assisted passage to Quebec. If you look at the Ordnance Survey Historical Mapping function on the OSI website HERE you should be able to zoom in to the area to see the townland in the present and the past (when you get to the page the link to zoom into the map is just above their Price List for those who want to purchase a map. You just want to view so it's free from there).
It takes a bit of time to get the hang of it but it is great to be able to see the old features on the landscape like the wells, lime kilns and castles.
Best wishes
Clare Doyle
