Banco or Banko - James Banco, Artisan,Silversmith at Eyrecourt Castle, died and buried there in churchyard in 1722.
Was he a Huguenot from France? Was he from Spain? How do I find out?
John Banco was a watch & clock maker at Cumberland St. Birr. (1823)
Banco family were buried at Birr, Church of Ireland. Some migrated to Australia 1850's.
I will be grateful for further information in tracing these ancestors.

Hi Roisin,
Thank you very much for your query to Ireland Reaching Out. Could you please port your query on the County Offaly parish profile pages of Birr: http://www.irelandxo.com/group/birr-offaly and for Banagher (the parish name is Reynagh): http://www.irelandxo.com/group/reynagh-offaly
You could try checking the 1824 directory by J. Pigot and Co. called City of Dublin and Hibernian Provincial Directory. This is available at the National Library of ireland or the Chuch of Latter Day Saints Film 451787. You might find information about his trade as clock and watchmaker in it.
Best of luck in your research!
Kind regards,
Sinead Cooney

Hi Roisin,
take a look at the list of inscriptions that I have uploaded under Eyre's Church on the Eyrecourt/ Meelick/Clonfert page. There are four Banko's named between three memorials in Eyres Church graveyard - Mary, James, John and Sarah. Sarah was married to an Edward Horsman. You very likely have all of this alrady. You should also look at the footnotes in the uploaded document for other possible directions. According to local Eyrecourt tradition a Banko silver smith from Eyrecourt made the Galway City Mace. While this is uncertain and is only an anecdotal account, it does however suggest that they were highly regarded silver smiths. Their involvement in silver craft in the city of Galway is made all the more plausible due to the strong Eyre connection at both places. This could be worth following up on as a side line, if only to refute the idea.

Hi Roisin,
it's probably a bit of a reach, and I will have to check with my mum back in Australia... but I do know that the first of my ancestors to immigrate to Austalia was a Banco from Galway. This happened in 1836.
I will be talking to my mum again next weekend and I will find out the name of my ancestor.
Cheers,
Mark

Hi Christy
I am trying to crack a major brick wall in my family tree, and find some more information regarding my Gx3 grandfather, George Kennedy, who was an attorney in Offaly and Dublin in the early 19th century. I know that he married a Hannah Banco, and that they had a child- Pemberton- together, and that he dedicated a memorial to her- supposedly in Reynagh...
You'd think that this would be more than enough to track him down, but the trail runs cold... I know about the prominence of the local Banco family, and where Hannah fits in, but I have been struggling with George now for over 2 years... There are no records for him in King's Inn in Dublin, and yet between the 1820's and 1840's he was holding down a successful practice in Tullamore and Dublin, according to the Directories... Does anyone have some local inside knowledge?
The good folk at the Reynagh parish XO suggeted that I post my query here as well, as you were a man who new much about the area!
Sincerely-
Dr David Caldicott

Hi there to everyone trying to find information on the Banco/Banko family...
David... I found your Gx3 grandmother Hannah. She did indeed marry George Kennedy, but the information on him is very minimal (http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/l/e/e/Brenda-Lee-Victoria/WE…), but the comment on her memorial gives some information about George.
"This monument is designed to perpetuate the memory of Hannah Kennedy otherwise Banko, being a tribute of affection paid to her virtues by her affectionate husband George Kennedy of the City of Dublin Homes of Law. She died 5 December 1797 in the 22nd year of her age. Eminently possessing those virtues which rendered her endearing. She was a fond mother, a tender and affectionate wife and an amiable friend. Universally esteemed in life as she is now in death by all her acquaintances. For Hannah, gone where all would wish to go"
Hope this helps you in your journey of discovery.

Hello,
My name is Kellie Banko, I am a decedent of the Bankos from Eyrecourt. In 2010 I travelled to Eyrecourt from Austalia and took a heap of photos of the castle and the church. I found the gravestone of the original immigrant to Ireland James Banko. If anyone would like to see these images they can be found here: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/l/e/e/Brenda-Lee-Victoria/in…
If anyone has more information on the Banko's in Ireland and before this I would be very appreciative. Feel free to contact me about any information you require.
Regards,
Kellie
