Dia dhuit. I am reaching out in the hope of furthering my research of the MADDEN family, in particular John MADDEN, born 1792, died Menangle, New South Wales, Australia 1851; his wife Bridget WHITTAKER; their children: Patrick b circa 1814, d Campbelltown, New South Wales, Australia 1863; Margaret b circa 1817, d Galway; John b circa 1818, d 1892 Grenfell, New South Wales, Australia. Further information at <https://sites.google.com/site/ourfamilysitegroup/Home/madden/madden-john>. John Snr was convict arriving in 1820; his wife and family arrived in Australia some years later. Would be grateful for some assistance. Ray Thurlow

  • Hello Ray

Many thanks for your genealogy message.  Your website on your famiy ancestors is amazing. You have alot of work done all ready.  You mention Margaret Born approx 1817 and she remained in Galway. Do you have any other information on her.

I will forward your message to the Clontuskert parish volunteers, and hopefully we may get some additional information.

  • Hello Paula

I am very sorry for not replying sooner. In answer to your query, Margaret Madden, born circa 1817 died very young and did not accompany her mother and two brothers to what was then the Colony of New South Wales (now Australia) to be reunited with John who arrived here in 1820 as a convict.

  • Hello Ray,

A single Madden headstone occurs in Clontuskert Abbey graveyard. It names a John Madden as one of the people who erected it. Perhaps this may be of interest to you. The date seems to tally with when your ancestor John was present in Clontuskert.  Hopefully these two additional names Laurence and James might be a further clue in your quest. The James mentioned here was born c.1793 making him a year younger than your ancestor John. Perhaps they were siblings.

O LORD HAVE MERCY ON THE SOUL OF JAMES MADDEN WHO DEPD MAY 13TH 1818 AGED 25 YEARS ERD BY HIS BROTHERS LAURENCE AND JOHN MADDEN.

You can acces this entry by visiting www.galwaycoco.ie Click on Services . Then click on heritage > archaeology > graveyards and finally Clontuskert Abbey. Search by name. If you hover on the picture of the headstone you will see the inscription. I hope this proves to be of some use to you.
