What a great project!

In 1848, my ancestor, Ann Tarpey, placed a message in the Boston Pilot looking for her husband, James Kenny.  She listed her home as follows:

County: Mayo (I know that has changed)

Parish: Kilcolman

Townland: Ballaghardus

Barony:  Clanmorris

Poor-Law: Claremorris

Ann and James had two daughters, Mary T. born in Ireland around 1843 and Bridget (Delia) Irene born around 1848.

I believe Ann Tarpey was born around 1820 and her parents were Marion Finley and David Tarpey.

I am interesting in finding out:

1. What are the birthdates, marriage dates, etc, of the names I already have?

2.  Who were James Kenny's parents/extended family?

3.  James Kenny was some sort of linen or cloth salesman/merchant.  He was on a sales trip to the US when he disappeared and was never heard from again -"sailed from Sligo, 2 March 1847, in the brig Imperial, Capt. George Salter, and landed in New York, April 19th, 1847".  I assume this not a passenger ship, as I can find no record of it in lists.  Were textiles a common industry in the Kilcolman area?  Would there be any record of his business or that ship somewhere?

4.  Who were Marion Finley and David Tarpey's children?  I know that several came over to the US.  Did any remain in Ireland?

Thank you for any help you can provide!

Sarah

  • Hi Sarah,

Thank you very much for your query and your lovely comment!

Well, you have done a great job finding out all that information about your ancestors. That will be a big help for you when you start looking through records. The more detail you have the better. Have you tried checking passenger lists, emigration records etc. for both Ann and James? Records were usually kept at the port of arrival, so you should try there first. It is likely that James came from closeby where Ann was from. You should post this message on the Clanmorris parish profile: http://www.irelandxo.com/group/kilcolman-clanmorris-mayo

Also, for information on industry in the area, try consulting this: 1846 Slater, National Commercial Directory of Ireland, NLI (National Library of Ireland).

Where were their daughters born, Ireland or the US? You might find that birth records will give you more clues.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney
