I am looking for any information pertaining to Dennis Dewine and/or Mary Mitchell, my records indicate they were married in Loughrea and immigrated to the United States in May 1850. This couple is my ggg grandparents. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time.

Hi Cheryl,
Thank you very much for your query to Ireland Reaching Out. Have you considered checking the General Register Office (GRO) for a marriage record? Or failing that, writing to the parish priest in Loughrea?
Do consider other variant spellings if you have trouble find 'Dewine', as this name might be the more commonly known 'Devine'.
If you know the name of the ship they emigrated on, then there may be information at the port of arrival (US), rather than the port of departure (Ireland).
Best of luck with your research!

Hello Sinead,
Thank you for your suggestions. I have searched through several variants of the last name Dewine. My best guess is it was spelled Devine, since at least one of his sons used that spelling. The only information I have linking him to Loughrea is his headstone and it was mentioned in his obituary that he and Mary were married in the same town where Mary was from. I have been searching for at least 10 years for clues relating to this couple.
I would be interested in information regarding the parish priest contact.
I will also try and search for a marriage record through the GRO, I know Dennis was Catholic and heavily involved in the St. Pauls Church in Yellow Springs, Ohio after he came to the U.S on unknown ship in 1850.
Any other suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time.

Hi Cheryl,
Thanks for your reply. You have done well to find out that information. It is very telling that the name Devine was used by other family members, and this is the name I would look into. The name Dennis Dewine was not found on Griffith's Valuation, but the name Mary Mitchell was found by one of our volunteers here. It shows that Mary Mitchell lived on Barrack Street in Loughrea town. This is the only Mary Mitchell found on the list for the town, so there is a good chance that this is the same Mary you are looking for.
Dennis was perhaps from another locality, so it would be great to know which one. Maybe someone in the community will know.
You could also contact the National Archives of Ireland to see if they are listed in the 1841 census. Loughrea is one of the few places with surviving records for this census. The call number is: M 150 (2). It is also in the Genealogical Office with call number: GO 622 pp 53 & ff
The contact details for the parish priest is:
Parish Priest: Fr. Christy O?Byrne
Tel: (090) 968 5613
Mobile: (086) 344 9345
Email: cvob@eircom.netKind regards,
Sinead

Hello Sinead,
I emailed Fr. Christy, but he replied he is in another parish, Lawrencetown and Kiltormer.
I believe the correct contact information for looking up Loughrea Parish records is to email loughreacathedral@eircom.net and their phone number is (091) 841212.
Thank you!
Mary
