  • Hi there,

Thank you very much for your query to Ireland Reaching Out. Have you tried looking at the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38)? You have the names and the area where Martin's parents are from, so you might be able to find out more information in these records.

I hope this is of some help.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney

  • Further to Sinead's Tithe Applotment suggestion (now online), the only obvious John Kean sound alike is John Cain, living in Curraslusta. That would be Corrasluastia in Griffith's Valuation of 1854. Many families appear to be missing from the Tithe index, given the relatively high population at the time. There were several Kane/Keane's in Griffith's. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/roscommon/kiltullagh.php

The parish register starts in 1839 so we both have the same problem. There is a publication, 'Marriages in RC Diocese of Tuam 1821-1829' but Martin would be unlikely to overestimate his age.

Land or Rental records may hold the answer but you would need the Townland your ancestors came from.

  • Note to Charlie Kean:

I am looking for Tully ancestors in Kiltullagh parish.  In the 1832 Tithe Book there is a Michael Tully in Curraphooka and  John Tully in Clougher (Clogher).  Perhaps there is a relationship with your Mary Tully.  By the way, Curraphooka seems to be a very small place which I can't even find in the townland listings for Kiltullagh.

Please let me know if you find your Mary Tully.  I am actually looking for Owen Tully who was recorded somewhere as living in Kiltullagh in 1798.

    Thank you.

  • There are no records of this couple having issue in Kiltullagh Parish. The records commenced Nov 1839. By any chance did Martin Marry before he left the parish. Martin Kean was a name in Clooncrim townland. In 1842 there is a record of a John being born to a Martin Kean and Winifred Flynn.
