John McAleer, was born about 1792 in Tyrone, and was married to Ann Hughes of parish Cappagh about 1814.  They had three children in Ireland, and he worked as a spademaker at Drumnakilly, Termonmaguirk, Tyrone.  About 1821, he sailed on a small packet to New Brunswick; he returned and brought his family in 1823. In New Brunswick, he and his wife had 5 more children, and he made more spades. John McAleer died at St. John City 8 March 1873.

  • Hi there,

Thank you very much for your query to Ireland Reaching Out.

There are some records for the Termonmaguirk area dated to 1780. This is a householders list that can be found at the Representative Church Body Library GS 2/7/3/25. If you are lucky, you might find John McAleer's parent's details listed on this.

I hope this is of some help.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney

  • Dear Sinead,

Thank you for your reply.  I hope to visit the RCBL some day, but cannot in the near future. Please let me know if records are available in print,  digitized, or on film outside of Ireland.

    Best regards,

    Beth McAleer
