Dear all, I am trying to find out my husband's grandfather's family history and have been looking for nearly a year now. Unfortunatley I have very little to go on. My mother-in-law is the last of his children and because her mother died when she was just six years old she and one of her sisters were brought up in Nazareth House in Cardiff. They had no contact with anybody while they were there and when they left at the age of sixteen their father died a few months later.
His name was Patrick Riordan and his year of birth differs on his marriage and death record but I have estimated it between 1878/1883. On his marriage certificate in 1918 his fathers occupation is a railway porter and is deceased at this time. I have found a birth certificate for a Patrick Riordan born 1881 to Patrick Riordan and Hanora Hanly living at Browns Lane, Edward Street, Limerick, and his father's occupation is a special guard, railway. Because I know so little I still can't be sure this is him. I wrote a letter in the Limerick Leader asking for any help or advise but unfortunatley had only one response from a lovely lady who wasn't a relative but has been very helpful. Because I live in South Wales, G.B. I am restricted in my search. I have written to the Railway History Society in Dublin to ask for thier help in searching thier archives but have not had a reply. Church records are probably the best option now but I only wish that I could be 100% sure that I have the right family. If there is anyone who could help or advise me then please reply. I look forward to hearing from anyone!!!
kind regards, Sharon & Kenny.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately there is no Patrick Riordan of my great grandfathers age with the occupation of a railway porter/guard in either the 1901 or 1911 census. My grandfather joined the RMF before this time so he is not on the census either. The only possible siblings I have found were deceased by 1898 so because I am not sure of his mothers name or any other siblings I am not sure which Riordan family are his!! I thought that if I could find an employment record for my great grandfather that might give me his address and then I could identify which Riordan family was my grandfathers. I have been unable to find a marriage record for a Patrick Riordan to Hanora Hanly and I have found a Riordan family at Nelson Street from St Micheals school records with the fathers occupation a railway porter but I don't know the parents names. The possible birth record for my grandfather had the address Edward Street. I really need to identify the right family before I can do anything else but it is proving very difficult with the little evidence that I have got. That is why I thought that the railway archives would be my best bet. Any advise is greatly appreciated, regards, Sharon.

I have been searching for a long time now and have not got much further than when I first placed my first message. My husbands g-great grandparents whom I believe to be Patrick Riordan and Hanora Hanly had five children that I have managed to find and they were Maria Riordan b1873, Matthew Riordan b 1875, Johanna Delia Riordan b 1877,Laurence Riordan b 1879 and my husbands grandfather Patrick Riordan b 1881. All were born in Limerick. I have been unable to find a marriage certificate for Patrick and Hanora and I have been unable to take my search any further. I really need to identify if this Riordan family are my husbands ancestors. If anyone can relate to this family or help in any way I would be very greatful. Kind regards, Sharon.
