DOOLEY:  Looking for a Lawrence Dooley b c1796 occupation cattle dealer, married to a Margaret Larkin; children Patrick, Bridget (married Michael Gavin), Martin, Mary, Lawrence, Thomas, Catherine and William Riley.  Children believed to be born in Mount Bellew, Co Galway between about 1832 and 1850.

Does anyone know anything about the Dooley families from this area or know of any Dooley's still residing in this area?

  • Hi there,

It looks like Mountbellew is in the Roman Catholic diocese of Killian. Church records are available dating from 1804 (baptismal and marriage records). These are available from the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 4613, 4614, or the Church of Latter Day Saints, ref. no. 0989748.

Civil records are available from the General Register Office (GRO), but these only date from 1864.

You could check the 1901 and 1911 census records to see if many Dooleys still lived in the area. Youc an check this here: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffth's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

You could check the Reproductive Loan Fund records. This covers more than 50 parishes including the ones you are interested in. These can be found in the UK National Archives, NA (Kew). T91.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

  • Apologies Sinead, I must have missed your reply.  Thank you for the great suggestions.

    We have updated information.

We have located our great great Grandmother Mary Dooley b c1826 (daughter of Edward Dooley, occupation whitesmith) as an orphan in the Mount Bellew Workhouse 1852.  Records indicate she was last living in Clonbrock.

In my previous post, I mentioned Lawrence Dooley whom was the brother of Edward Dooley.

    kind regards
