I am looking for family information on Jeremiah Carey who was from Nenagh. He was born around 1816 and joined the 58th Regiment of Foot in 1832. He married Margaret McKinnon (sometimes spelled McKenna) in 1842 in Edinburgh.  After living in Australia for a few years with the regiment, they ended up settling in Auckland, New Zealand.

  • Hi Alison,

I would suggest you check the UK National Archives for military information about your ancestor. You will also need to check the UK/Scotland for the marriage record.

Do you know what religion he was? There are RC church records for Nenagh dating from 1792 for both baptismal and marriage records. These are available from the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 2483 (B. to 1809); 2484. If yoiu have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

There is also the possibility that his family are mentioned in the land record called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38).

His family may also be mentioned in the Freeholders list (1776). This is at the National Archives of Ireland, M.1321-2.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

  • You could try contacting the local Genealogical Centre www.tipperarynorth.ie/genealogy  - they have extensive records for all of North Tipperary and only charge a small fee for research work.
