Patrick Gallen (my 2 x grandfather) was born cJuly 1854 Killygordon Co Donegal (Sponsor Patrick Muoy (Moy) & Catherine Boyle)

He was one of six children born to William Gallen and Bridget Muoy (Moy) married Sept 1848 Killygordon Co Donegal

(witness:Michael McGlinsey & Laughlin Callahan).

Other children: Maurice 1849 (Sponsor James McDavitt & Margaret McDavitt); Rose 1850 (Sponsor: William Quinn & Rose Muoy (Quinn)); Mary 1852 (Sponsor John Muoy & Bridget Gallagher); John 1856 (Sponsor: William Quinn & Grace Gallen) & William 1858 (Sponsor: William Boyle & Rose Muoy).

Patrick came to Australia in 1877. His fare was paid by his Uncle James Moy who was already established in Australia. His brother Maurice, John and sister Rose also followed on to Australia. John Gallen eventually went on to NZ. I have never been able to find what happened to Rose or William. I believe he stayed behind to with his parents (?).

It would be interesting if there were any more information to be found regarding the family in Killygordon/Donaghmore. I appreciate there are a lot of Gallens in the area, and they did seem in intermarry. I have a particular interest in Maurice Gallen b c1791 married Catherine Boyle. Their son John Gallen b c1811 (married Margaret Byrne) also came out to Australia in 1840.  I have a strong suspicion that this John Gallen is brother to William Gallen that married Bridget Muoy (Moy)..but I'll see if I get any replies to this message :).

I have lots of information on these families in Australia, and am happy to exchange.

  • Thank you Robbiemac..I have seen pages on that site before, but not that particular link - so thanks..it all builds a picture...

It did get me thinking about Rose Gallen b1850 as per my original post..so I spent some Euro, and I think I found her marriage record.

Rose GALLEN married John HANNIGAN 13 May 1877 in Killygordon. She was from Meenreah (sic), and he from Kirkminster. His father Edward HANNIGAN. Witness - Maurice GALLEN & Rose MOYE.

I picked them up in the 1901 cenus in Raphoe..they had eight children.

I'm reasonably sure William Gallen stayed in Ireland, as he is also in the 1901 cenus with his mother Bridget still in Meenreagh (along with a lot of other Gallens!). It looks like he did not marry.
