Hoping to find baptismal and marriage records for Great Grandparents.  Records for Rosmuc Parish didn't start until 1840.

  • Hi there,

Can you please add as much information as you know about your ancestors. Names, dates, etc. would greatly help both me and people from the local community to help find what you are looking for. Unfortunately, if the records were not kept before 1840, then it will be difficult to find birth records etc. However, you might be able to find other information.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

  • Sinead,

I've been to the National Library and looked at the Rosmuc film.  There are no marriage records for Rosmuc.  So then where would they have been married?  Lettermore?  Kilcummin Oughterard?  I've been to the Galway Family History Center.  Both last July.  Not as much time as I'd like to spend but received some useful information.  We know the oldest daughter Mary was baptized in Rosmuc just prior to immigration to the U. S. in 1858.  She was baptized on 3 Mar 1857.  I assume for now her actual birth was Feb 28, 1857.  Then that they were married on or before date of conception which would have been about 7 June 1856 which was a Saturday.  Patrick "Holloran" married Catherine Lydon and John "Holloran" married Mary Lydon.  There is another Patrick Halloran in Illaneragh  married to Barbara Keely who had a child in 1864 baptized in Lettermore.  Assume this is a cousin but is not the same as my Great Grandfather.  I have a family tree on Ancestry.com under Patrick Hollarn.

FYI, I also have some Kilcummin Valuation of Tenements pages (16, 30, 32, 33) for the area but it doesn't sort out who is who very well or whether John Halloran for example had more than one property as a John is listed in a couple of places. And what is the relationship to Hugh Halloran?  Puzzles for sure.

Thank you for your interest and any assistance.

  • Hi there,

Yes this is a puzzle indeed! Perhaps you should write/email the parish priest in Rosmuc. Here is a page with the contact details (by the way, the priest's name in English is Fr Michael Brennan): http://www.galwaydiocese.ie/parishes/rosmuc

He might know what has happened to the marriage records there (if indeed any marriages took place there at all). It's worth trying at least.

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864 however. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm You might be able to find Barbara Keely's child in these records.

Have you checked the land records for names? You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffth's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

Could you please post your message on the Killannin (Lettermore) parish profile page here: http://www.irelandxo.com/group/killannin-galway

    Kind regards,

    Sinead

  • Hi There ,

My Grandfather was Michael Halloran, whom I believe owned 7 acres of land on West Island back in the 1920's my Father was Patrick Halloran who was born in Jan 1926,he had a brother called Michael who was 2 years younger.

Somehow the Lydon's are related to us by marriage I believe, maybe my Grandfather married one ?

I would love to know more if you can help me.

    Please email

    Regards

  • Marian,

John Halloran married Mary Lydon.  Not sure when.  My great grandfather married Catherine Lydon.  They were married about 1856 but haven't been able to find a record or where.   They arrived in the US in 1858.  I only have estimates of birth years.  It's hard to trace Halloran's there around West Island and Kibricken and Rosmuc Parish.  Are you in Ireland.  I may be able to coach you on where to go.  I think we are on track to sorting out some family members and how we/they are related.

I think your MIchael's father was Patrick (married to Mary Toole in 1895).  and Patrick's father was John.  The elder John I believe was my grandfather's brother and their father was also named John.

You can contact me at hollarnj@cs.com

    Thanks,

    Jim

  • Hello all,

I have been searching my grandparent's Irish origins for many years. My grandmother, Dehlia O'Malley was said to have come from Rosemuc by her daughters who have since passed. Dehlia left for America 1912/1913 at age 19/20. She was born June 11, 1893 (and died 31 Oct 1937 in St. Paul after having 11 children, one of whom is my mother). She married Michael Joseph Flaherty in America in 1914. I think she came through Philadelphia on her way to Minnesota. Her parents reportedly are: Michael O'Malley and Bridget Hanrahan. If anyone can guide me, my family would be delighted....
