I'd be interested in finding out more about this parish. My husband's great grandmother Elizabeth Begley was born here in  1867. Her father John Begley was serving as a soldier in the garrison at that time. He was with the Hampshire Regiment.

  • Hi there,

You could take a look at this website about Cahir, Co.Tipperary: http://www.visitcahir.ie/

The parish of Caher (Diocese of Cahir - Waterford and Lismore) Roman Catholic church records start from 1776 for baptismal and marriage records. You can check these at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 2459, 2460. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864 however. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffth's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

The best place to check for military records is the UK National Archives website here: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ I also found this link for you: http://www.freewebs.com/tipperarybarracks/

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

  • valerie,

You might also try a website www.originsnetwork.com.  The militia attestations index (1872-1915) covers over 12,500 militismen in the royal garrison artillery in Ireland.

You might find your ancestor there.

  • thank you so much Tom,

I'm finding this difficult to reply to! this is my 3rd attempt. the earlier ones were longer.

John Begley was born in Nenagh and I have his baptism record so I'm sorry for your trouble.

Anything more you can find would be great. I think little Mary died as a baby as she disappears after this and her name seems to have been recycled.

    Best wishes
