Francis(Frank)Paul paid passage for younger siblings to USA to Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania.Unable to find Francis Paul and Benjamin's births in Ireland. Also if Benjamin a middle name, being English?

Family lived, mostly, on Moore and Grace Streets in Kilrush. Cannot find parents(Patrick/Mary Ann) wedding and births.

Family information not always correct, so we don't know for sure if Patrick Butler's parents are Francis Butler and

Mary Burke. Did check Griffiths.

Also had contact with a Francis Keane in England, his late Mom being Christina Butler,(Michael/John) Have made many attemps to recontact, but unsuccessful. He told me son Michael married a Mary Murphy(in 1901/1911 census Lisdeen), many children by same given name, confusing for sure! Michael stayed in Ireland to take care of the candy(sweets)business, family story.

Clare Library has much information, but who/where would I contact someone to try to locate births, weddings information

prior to 1864 in Catholic churches?

I'm looking forward to your program getting off the ground and have sent many Irish folks the website! Keep up the GOOD work. Thanks Lois Butler at lois223b@yahoo.com

  • Hi Lois

Many thanks for you email and genealogy message. We only have a few parishes signed up for Co Clare, yet!

It takes time. I will put up a profile for Kilrush parish.

Thank you for your kind words about the website. The project only just went nationwide. I will try and source some information for you. Will be in touch again... hopefully with some genealogy information. Good luck with your genealogy quest. PaulaIreland Reaching Out HQ

  • Since my last post, with ALL your help, I reconnected with my England Butler contact, seeing message here! TY...WOW!

Now,he's learned that Frank Butler's(My husbands grandpap) christening(his late Mom wrote down while on a holiday to Ireland) as 23 July 1862,looks to be lst child,as parents Patrick and Mary Ann (Allender) Butler married 20 Oct 1861, witnesses Pat Taylor and Mary McC????g  ?? These dates were found by a priest in a Catholic Church..we don't know where.

The family moved around,we noticed their 2nd child christened 14 Jan 1864 in Co.Clare, Kilrush,Kilkee district. Thought maybe this is where they married and Francis born?

Question-having the Kilrush microfilm(but not Kilkee district?) and knowing birth registrations began in 1864,

how would I go about finding proof of the above 2 dates? We've also found that Allenders and Butler's from Co.Clare,Kilrush,Kilrush,(Griffiths-TY Paddy Walden) but unable to find parents marriage and Francis(Frank)Butler's birth/christening.

Any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated. Lois

  • My grandfather was Benjamin Butler married to Annie Sullivan who died in 1931. The both lived in Kilrush. My grandfather was the son of the owner of a confectionary factory but I don't know the name (of my great grandfather, perhaps Michael Butler). Benjamin Butler was in the Irish guards and fought in nearly all of the major battles in the first world war. I have no date when died. He moved to Bristol England and re-married. The children (including my mother) were put in the orphanage in Kilrush which was run by nuns at the time. The children also moved to Bristol England some years later. My mother was Monica May Butler (Born May 3 1929 in Athlone, died December 15 1993 in Bristol - Married name Rathbone). I am very keen to find out any information about the Butlers (and if known Annie Sullivan)

  • Just saw this Bob......Your grandfather Ben,married to Annie Sullivan, having 6 daughters in Kilrush:Mary Anne-1920,Helen-1922,Angela-1923,Nora-1931,twins Christina and Pauline-1933. This Ben was the son of Michael and Mary Ann Murphy of Kilrush, who stayed in Ireland to take care of the confectionary business. Guess they moved to Athlone, where your Mom,Monica born in 1929,looking at the gap between 1923 and 1931 births. I wasn't aware they were in orphanage, guess due to Annie's death?

I had same situation with my maternal grandma's siblings..farmed out to relatives, after their Mom's death,as the father couldn't take care of them and work at the same time. Understandable.

I will e-mail my Butler cousin if he knows anymore..and yes, we saw this Ben Butler had served in WWI.

Now to fill you in on prior Butler family, Francis and Mary Burke Butler lived in Kilrush, he the confectioner..his son(don't have anyother children at this time)Patrick married Mary Ann Allender in 1861.

Patrick was a baker and Allenders were the butchers in Kilrush., Moore St,Burton, etc.Their oldest son,Francis Patrick(Frank)

was my husbands Grandpap. He came to USA about 1882/84. When Patrick/Mary Ann died in 1888, he paid passage for the younger siblings to USA to take care of them. .I'm looking for HIS brother Benjamin(1884-??) who also served,we think,in WWI-British. this Ben came to USA,also. Family story was brother Michael stayed in Ireland to take care of the confectionary business. My cousin is the grgrandson of Michael, thru his son John. They all  went to England abt. 1950 or so to get work!  Paddy was only one who stayed in Ireland, dieing in 2013,but he never married.

If you would give me your e-mail address, I can show you more....on FaceBook,Paddy Waldron has a page on Kilrush, then also is p.j.culligan,who gave cousin the names/births of your Ben's daughters in Kilrush, think still living there. Also my cousins tree on ancestry.com..are you a member? Let me know.  Hope this helps some. Lois

I checked the census and found lots more siblins

    Benjimin

  • Hi

I am helping a friend research her Butler side too.

She knows that James Butler b 1847 Rockvale, KILRUSH, Co Clare married Margaret Anne Fogarty who was born in Dalby Queensland in 1854.

James parents were were John Butler and Mary O'Keefe.   Wondering if John Butler (this one) is the older brother of your Patrick Butler.  If the family followed the naming tradition, your Patrick has a John in the family, so hoping to see a connection.    That would made Patrick her James Butler (who went to Australia) nephew.  WOuld love to know please.

She doesn't know if James and Margaret stayed in Ireland, she has only just discovered the surnames in the family tree and starting to explore.

There is also a MASSIVE Butler population in Australia, on the west and the east, let us know if you need any links to family here (any surnames, happy to help... I am a Kelly by birth)

    Kind regards

    Ada
