Hi Rob,

Not knowing exactly where Robert was from can be frustrating, but don't let that put you off just yet! You have a few clues at least and that might help to get the search going. You know that he and his wife left Ireland about 1841-42, so that at least will rule out a lot of records here. Do you have any emigration information, such as destination, date, ship, port of departure?

There a number of documents you could check:

• 1838-48 Reporductive Loan Funds records. This list covers many parishes including Kilkeevin and Tibohine. This is located in the UK National Archives, catalogue number T 91. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/
• 1838 Memorial from inhabitants of Frenchpark for Quarter Sessions. c.250 names. National Archives of Ireland OP 1850/114.
• 1837 Memorial for Quarter Sessions at Castlerea. Kilkeevin is mentioned. c.260 names. National Archives of Ireland, OP 1837/3
• You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffth's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

I could suggest earlier documents, but perhaps you should check these ones first! Perhaps the land records are the place to start your research. It may take some time, but at least you might be able to pinpoint a location at the end of it.

How can I tell If my Robert Dillon Is related to the famous Dillon's of Roscommon.He must be a branch of them

Hi Rob,

I would suggest you prepare what you already know of your Irish ancestors. Do you know what religion they were? Also consider checking the Roman Catholic church records available for the diocese of Tibohine (Elphin) and Kilkeevin (Elphin).

Kilkeevin records start from 1804 for baptismal and marriage records and from 1805 for burial records. These can be found at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 4619. Tibohine records start from 1833 for baptismal and marriage records. These can be found at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 6955 (1864). Pos. 4619. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

Then write to Co. Roscommon Historical and Archaelogical Society (Mrs. Mary O'Connell), or Roscommon County Library (Mr. Richie Farrell). You could also contact the Heritage Officer of Roscommon County Council (Ms. Nollaig Feeney). You should include all the information that you know.

Hello Sinead

Thank's for all your suggesting's. I have already contacted The Heritage center in Strokestown with no help there. The Genalogist  I hired In Ireland said he used all mean's available for research In Ireland,with no result's about Rober Dillon.I was In Roscommon this past Oct,and went to both catholic churche's in Tibohine and Kilkeevin,and they both said they have no record of Robert Dillon
