Kelly's from Clonfean Dunmore

My gr grandmother was Margaret Kelly and buried in the state of WI in 1868 .  she was the wife of Timothy Hurly my gr grandfather and was from the Ogulla Parish Co Roscommon .He is not buried there.     I would like to locate the baptism records of their children and when they immigrated to the USA  .    Delores Fargen

Hi there,

There are Roman Catholic church records available for the diocese of Dunmore (Tuam). These date from 1833 for both baptismal and marriage records. You can find these at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 4211, or the Church of Latter Day Saints, 1279210 item 4-8. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

There is a good chance that if they moved from another place, it was probably not too far from Dunmore.

You could also try checking surrounding parishes, such as Tuam as you mentioned. There are Roman Catholic church records available for the diocese of Tuam. These date from 1790 for baptismal  records and 1799 (?) for marriage records. You can find these at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 4211, and 4222, or the Church of Latter Day Saints, 1279208/09. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864 however. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

The area you mentioned, Clonfean is probable what is now Cloonfane, which is just outside |Dunmore town.

There are estate records for Dunmore: The landlord George Shee: National Archives of Ireland (NAI), M.3105-3120. Yearly rentals of the estate in and around Dunmore, 1837-59. All tenants.

Another: [No landlord given]: National Library of Ireland, 21 g 76 (14) and 21 g 76 (26). Maps of Cloonfane and Carogher townlands in Dunmore parish, with tenants' names. Mid-19th century.

Rose, this is just a theory, so please stick with me...

Traditionally, marriages took place in the location where the female was from...Catherine O'Neills townland/parish. But, I don't as yet know her family name or location(?)

One theory, again based on tradition, the first son born was named after his father's father and the second son born was named after his mother's father, the third son born was named after his father

You don't mention the children (names) of Michael Kelly and Catherine O'Neill here, but searching through other posts I noted:
Sarah Kelly born 1835
Bridget Kelly born 1836
Patrick Kelly born 1837
John Kelly born 1838 died 1839
John Kelly born 1840
Michael Kelly born 1843
Mary Kelly born 1845

Based on that tradition:
first son born was named after his father's father - first son=Patrick -> Michael Kelly's father=Patrick Kelly
second son born was named after his mother's father - second son=John -> Catherine O'Neill's father=John O'Neill
third son born was named after his father-this appears to be the case third son is named Michael

also tradition in relation to daughters names:
First daughter born was named after her mother's mother - first daughter=Sarah -> Catherine O'Neill's mother=Sarah O'Neill
Second daughter born named after her father's mother - second daughter=Bridget -> Michael Kelly's mother=Bridget Kelly
Third daughter born named after her mother - third daughter born Mary....this part does not hold up, from the view point that the third daughter is Mary and her mothers name was Catherine (although may have been Mary Catherine, or Catherine Mary???)

Based on the above

Michael Kelly's parents = Patrick and Bridget Kelly
Catherine O'Neill's parents = John and Sarah O'Neill

This may/may not be the case...may help finding the previous generation (or not)...but just to keep an open mind re same.

Gortnagoyne is close to Dunmore and indeed close to the townland of Cloonfane (have a look a map here http://garrafrauns.com/page8.php and on Google maps)
If this John O'Neill is Catherine (Kelly) O'Neills father then is most likely that Catherine was born and married in the general Dunmore area.
As you have already found out records are next to impossible to locate around that time...maybe gravestones might be a route to go...maybe looking into the parents of Catherine and Michael Kelly???)
