My Great-Great Grandfather William O'Keeffe was born about 1808-1810.  He married Johanna Burke at Milford County Cork in 1835. Their son William was born in 1836, another son Jeremiah may have been born before they  left Ireland but it is unknown if they brought him to Australia.   William, Johanna and William Jnr  arrived in New South Wales as immigrants in August, 1839 on the "Navarino".  His immigration papers record his place of birth as Dunmore, Co. Cork.  William was a Wheelwright and his father  was Jeremiah O'Keeffe, his mother  was not named on immigration papers.  Where is Dunmore please?  Does anyone know where the nearest Catholic parish is?  Johanna was from Newtown, Co. Cork, I have found her baptism in 1804 in Shandrum parish.  Her parents were William and Ellen Burke. Johanna was previously married to Patrick Wall and had 3 children, Ellen, Patrick and John Wall, they came to Australia with Johanna and their step-father William O'Keeffe.  Any information or suggestions please??

  • Hi there,

Could you please post your message on the Kilbolane (Milford) parish page here: http://www.irelandxo.com/group/kilbolane-cork

There are Roman Catholic church records available for the diocese of Kildorrery (Kilbolane). These date from 1829 for baptismal records and 1822 for marriage records. You can find these at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 4992. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

I tried to find a Dunmore in Co. Cork, but I was unable to find it. Perhaps someone in the local community might recognise it?

You might be able to find William advertised as a wheelwright in some of the trade directories or newspapers of the area. You might be able to find some of these on this very helpful website. It includes lots of information for Co. Cork: www.failtefomhat.com Trade directories for that period in Cork include:

1810 William West, 'Directory of Cork'

    1812 John Connor, 'Cork Directory. Also 1817, 1826, 1828.

1820 J. Pigot, 'Commercial Directory of Ireland'

1824 J. Pigot and Co., 'City of Dublin and Hibernian Provincial Directory'

1846 Slater's 'National Commercial Directory of Ireland'

You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at. Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38). Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS).

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

  • Thanks for those suggestions Sinead..

There is a Dunmore south west?  of Clonakilty but not near Milford where he was married. I wondered if the he could have been from "Donoughmore" which I think is nearer Milford and the immigration/emmigration agents mis-spelt it when he arrived in Australia?

    Regards,

    Robyn

  • Hi Robyn,

Not being from the area it is difficult for me to say. What i would suggest is that you post your message on the parish page as well. That way you are covering both places.

  • Hi Robyn,

It seems we may be very distant cousins.

My GG Grandfather, Timothy Burke Rea (Rae), was also on the Navarino and without the assistance of the O'Keeffe family he could not have made the journey. Quoting from the Surgeon's Report :-

"It also appears that two persons were found concealed in the ship after we had put to sea viz. TIMOTHY RAE, Ploughman, by connivance of his relatives, the family O'Keefe. He was victualled May 13th and ...len McCarthy, Dairy, by the connivance of Jeremiah Gorman, her Uncle, she was victualled May 18th.  Both parties are of good conduct and character."

Timothy Burke Rea (native of Milford) was the son of Patrick Rea and Margaret Burke (from Newtown and sister of Johanna) who married in the Parish of Shandrum, Cork, on 28 November 1817.  Their parent's names were not stated but the witnesses were Edmond Burk and Edmond Donner.

Many years ago I did make an attempt to trace the O'Keeffe family in Australia but without luck.

I have not previously heard of the young Jeremiah.  It seems that only children aged from 1 to 15 were listed in the immigration papers, perhaps he was under one year old.

Sorry that this does not help you with locating Dunmore but I was very pleased to read your posting.

    Kind Regards,

    Kelvin Rea (NSW)
