Hi,

I am searching for grandparents on my Mother's Mom's side of the family

My  great grandfather was a William Glennon, born in Ireland around 1842 or 1846, per resouces found on ancestry.com. In 1870 he married Bridget  - born 1851 in Ireland (maiden name not known at this time)  They both had emigrated to the US in 1863. They settled in Thomaston, CT and raised a large family.

 

I am also looking for information on my great, great grandparents on my Mother's Dad's side of the family

The name is James Gotsell ( it could have been spelled Gatsel, or gatrell or some other variation)

James was born in Ireland in 1832 and he died in Thomaston CT in 1909.

He was married to Margaret O'Donnell who was born in 1829 in Ireland and died in 1926 in Thomaston, CT.

I don't know when they came to the US or where they were from in Ireland.

 

Anyy help in finding where they were from in Ireland would be appreciated.

    To have a realistic chance of finding anything significant, the minimum information generally required is your ancestors' county of origin in Ireland. Trying to find your ancestors without some idea of where they orginnated is very difficult. There are many, many parishes and many, many records!

    Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864 however. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

    Have you tried checking the Ellis Island records (www.ellisisland.org) or the Castle Garden records (www.castlegarden.org)? Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at, this could be a good place to find more information, and perhaps even find out an exact place of origin.

    Have you looked at any records in the Thomastown CT area? There might be important clues there.

    You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64).     You should also check local newspapers for the death notices, which might offer more information about them.
