Parents William & Ellen Meehan and children Edward and Thomas immigrated to the US in 1884 on the Arizona.  Children John & Mary and immigrated earlier.

It is my belief that they had opperated a brickyard near the water in Rahan.

Edward would be my grandfater.  The family ended up in Troy, NY and operated a Grocery Store.

  • Hi there,

There are Roman Catholic church records available for the diocese of Rahan and Lynally (Meath). These date from 1810 for both baptismal and marriage records. You can find these at the National Library of Ireland (NLI), Pos. 4174. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

Have you tried checking the Ellis Island records (www.ellisisland.org) or the Castle Garden records (www.castlegarden.org)? Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at, this could be a good place to find more information.

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864 however. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38). Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS).

You can information about the frequency of the name in the mid-19th century and any other variant spellings of the name here: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/

Here is some information about researching about bricklayers in Ireland. Besides these suggestions, I would suggest that you also check trade directories such as Slater's and Pigot's. You can find some of these on the following website: www.failteromhat.com A trade such as this may well have been listed under a major nearby town such as Tullamore. County Offay was once known as King's County.

Records of the Bricklayers' amd Stonemasons' Guild, from 1830. National Archives of Ireland (NAI), Acc. 1097.

Dun Laoghaire Genealogical Society Journal, 'Dublin City Tradesmen employed by Board of Works', Vol. 4 (2) (1995).

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney

  • Deb,

I have just seen your post but I'm a bit unsure what information you are looking for.

I may have missed a previous post.

I live quite close to where William and Ellen lived. I can send you a map showing the location if you wish.

Also if you need other information, I might be able to help.
