  • Hi Aine

I am trying to find out the connection between the O'Briens of Murroe and the Bourkes of Murroe.

    • William O'Brien is listed as a sponsor on Catherine Bourke 02-1830 Baptismal record
    • Mary O'Brien is listed as a sponsor on Edmund Bourke 9 May 1833 Baptismal record.

    What might be the connection?

Are William and Mary O'Brien husband and wife and are they related to the Bourkes?

    Thanks

  • Hello,

It will be hard to find the connection as when i looked back through it there are a lot of Bourke/O'Brien Families. O'Brien was a fairly common name in te parish at the time  so there was bound to be a connection.

It is very dificult to determine if the the female sponsors is married or not unless she has avery unusual name.

Here is what i found on the Bourke/O'Brien

    Michael Bourke and Hanora O'Brien

    1. Mgt -08 Apr 1815

    Thomas Bourke and Mary O'Brien

    1. Mary -20 Nov 1821

    Edmond and Mgt O'Brien

    1. Patrick - 24 Nov 1832

    Edmund and Mary O'Brien

    1. Michael-22 Apr 1835
    2. Mgt-11 Apr 1838
    3. John-04-Oct 1840
    4. Edmund 28Apr 1844

    Patrick and Betty Brien

    1. Judy -13 Dec 1836
    2. JOhn -27 JAn 1841
    3. Bridget 04 Nov 1846

    James and Ellen O'Brien

    1. John -08 Jan 1843
    2. Michael- 06 Oct 1844
    3. Patrick 23 Aug 1846

  • Hello Aine, my name is Sean Burston and I am starting on the jounrey to understand my Irish heritage. My mother is Irish and was born in Randalstown, Co Antrim. She moved to Australia when she was about seven and I grew up knowing of my Irish heritage. When I went to primary school I actually had an Irish accent because I spent so much time with mum when I was young, today my wife says that when talking to Irish people I revert to an Irish accent for some words (I just hope they dont think I am making fun of them). I didnt realise until I went to Ireland how much of how I had been brought up was familiar to me, I immediately felt at home. I dont quite know how to start understanding my history but I would really like to do it. My grandparents (mothers side) were Hugh Gaynor and Sarah (nee McGarry). I have been told, but dont know alot that some of the Gaynors were originally from Longford. Any advice or assistance you can offer would be greatly appreciated, I am sorry that I dont have anything to offer you in exchange.

  • Hi Sean

Well my great , great gandmother was Gaynor she was born in Murroe Parish in the 1860's and her father was from Newport in Co.Tipperary- The Gaynor line in the parish seemed to have ended with her , she had one brother James -He supposedly joined the british army and we dont know anymore about him.

I have had difficultly tracing them as the name has many variations of spelling Gainor  Gainer  , Gaynon ,even Guinane at one stage -very confusing !

Do you know the parish they are from? Are your Ancestors from Longford? If so your best bet would be to join the parish there.

I am sure we are related some where along the way though may be quite for back !

Let me know if you have any questions

  • Hello Aine,

Thought I had already put my message up on board somewhere but what the heck, can't seem to find it so please find attached family group sheet for what I have for Irish lot.

Some came from you I am sure, thanks, other stuff from various sources which if not noted I am happy to give (only human so miss stuff, lol).

Kennedy O'Brien presumably married Catherine/Katherine/Kitty Hayes at place and time unknown.

His birth is worked from his death and his death well, I am taking that as possible for the same place name is listed as birthplace for Mary a daughter who died in Australia and ties in with one of the girls coming to Australia too. It may be the daughter stayed to care for him and once he was gone she left to join family here.

    Kids are as listed.

Only Children I can make true claim to are the three that came to Australia.

Bless their souls with lovely names like they have Catherine, Mary and Thomas you would think they would be kind to me and at least swim together to reach these shores. Nope, each came alone. So they remain alone on a ship somewhere... waiting for me to find them still.

All three did do me a favour by staying in Victoria here at least, marrying, having any kids they had there and dying there too. I am forever grateful for drunks,  a brother in law who was meticulous and court record in discovering Mary and the actual place in Limerick where they supposedly hailed from and how long they were in Australia.

Now while it would be nice to know Kennedy married Kitty Hayes it does not help me find him before or later on.I imagine living where they did school records may no longer exist- if they were ever made to find all Kennedy's children all at one school.

The fact each of my three children migrated to same place in Australia has me wonder if dad came first or both parents with children following. Working on this assumption I have discovered:

    • There is a Kennedy O'brien who died in Victoria married Isabel ( vague recollection) and had kids etc in Ireland, time span is same as for my couple and descendant of his believes he is not connected to my lot. I keep my mind open to ALL possibilities. I have the death certificate for this fellow still so happy to give that information should another be connected to this alternative Kennedy O'Brien family.
    • There is a Kennedy O'brien in 1971 census in Canada with him in his elder years, still a farmer and with wife Catherine. Both born in Ireland and his birthdate is close to the one I have which is stupid for I got it from the other bloke who death in Ireland.

Nevertheless I cannot discount either till I have proof to the contrary.

If you have a Kennedy O'Brien who married Catherine Hayes and you know some of his kids migrated to Australia do share what you know.

Or if you are connected to any of the children listed please connect up on this board. I would happily add your information into my tree ( I don't have this current one online but do have some of it on other folks trees who I have sent the information to as Gedcom files) and will network with others in the future.

Catherine O'Brien is the only one of the three who emigrated to here who had children that I have found. Mary has no children on her death certificate and Thomas has no details of wife or kids but only inquest information was used for his so there is always a chance others are out there.

Happy to help fossick around for others if they have stuff here in Australia they need checking out.

Love a good hunt, hate ancestors beeing picky about who they want to find them and when.

Happy hunting. Don't forget check out the attached file

  • Good evening ?ine,

sorry its taken so long to respond, however have been doing some work to try and trace the family tree from my grandparents, who lived at Castle St Randalstown until they moved to Australia in 1957.

    Names I found are:
    * Gaynor side
    - Storey
    - McMullan
    - Donnelly
    - Hannon
    - McAshin?

    * McGarry side
    - McAteer
    - Barr
    - McRory

File is attached, not sure I have the correct Storey branch.

Any advice, information or contacts you could provide me with would be greatly appreciated.

    Best regards,

    Sean Burston

  • Hi Aine, great to find someone that has researched the families in this area.

I am descended from Jeremiah Kenna born around 1831 and his wife Bridget Gabbett. They were married in the Murroe parish on the 17 Feb 1857 and emigrated to Australia shortly after. They lived on a property at Riddells Creek just north of Melbourne.

I also have records of a Kennedy Kenna and Mary Doolan who married in the Murroe parish on the 24 Feb 1857 and emigrated to Australia shortly after on the same ship as Jeremiah and Bridget Kenna. Kennedy and Mary Kenna went to lived in the goldfields town of Ballarat in Victoria and I have records that indicate that Mary's family also moved to Ballarat. Newspaper stories from Ballarat indicate that Kennedy Kenna was a violent drunkard, who assaulted his wifeand children, and eventually took his life by hanging himself.

I assume that these 2 men were brothers. My records indicate that their parents were John Kenna and Susan Brien. These names did reappear in some of their childrens names.

The tithe applotment records for 1826 indicate that a John Kenna lived at Rathwood.

If you are able to tell anything about the Kenna or Brien families from this area that would be great.

I have also noticed that I have shared DNA matches with people from this area with the surname Burke. If you could also work out the link between the Kenna, Brien and Burke families that would be great. Thanks for being willing to help Aine. Kind Regards Ralph
