My ggg grandfather, Thomas Carolan, left Ireland with his daughter, Julia, my gg grandmother, in 1850. The wife of Thomas is unknown but thought to have been named Kitty. They settled in Jersey City, NJ, later moving to Canton, Fulton, Illinois. There Julia married Michael Daily and had four children. Their daughter, Catherine, was my great grandmother. Thomas' son, Bernard, left Ireland a few years later and first lived in Newark, NJ. He served four years in the 2nd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry during the War of the Rebellion and was wounded at the 2nd Battle of the Wilderness in 1864. Following the war he moved to Canton and married Mary Josephine Finan (County Roscommon) and raised a family. There were other children of Thomas but it is unknown if any others came to the USA. Anyone with a link to or knowledge of the Carolans is encouraged to contact me. Thanks.

  • HI John, Maybe I can help. I work at a local newspaper and can include something in the notes for Nobber asking for any information on your ancestors. If it's something you're interested in, let me know and best of luck :)

  • HI John,

Thanks for that info. Can you send me your email address to aine.faherty@meathchronicle.ie so that I can include it on piece so that anyone with information can get back to you directly . Also, if it was possible just to give me a little background information on yourself also like where you live, have you ever been to Ireland, intend to visit, do you have a family yourself....that kind of thing.

    Best regards,

    Aine

  • I have just noticed your email regarding the Carolan's. Somewhere in my files (give me a bit of time to get it out)

I know there is a Carolon connection in my husband's side of the family. His great great grandfather was Nicholas Halpin who married Mary Halpin. She was on of 3 sister who came to Australia and Mary married Patrick Lalor.

Mary's mother was Elizabeth Finnegan (I have information on all of that). What I do remember is that several of the baptism records included the name Carolan and I am fairly sure that one of the family actually married a Carolan. This may have actually, thinking about it further, been a sister of Elizabeth (nee Finnegan) Halpin.

Nicholas and Elizabeth Halpin were farming at Nobber, County Meath on the "Whitewood Estate". (note the name Whitewood on your baptism certificate).

Whitewood was part of the Gormanston Estate. Mary Halpin was actually a servant there and before coming to Australia was given instructions on a Whitewood letterhead which we still have.

I will get back to you.

  • Hi Esther,

I'm back home now and will send you an invite to my Ancestry.com, Dooley family tree. There you can view what I have on my Carolans. It mostly covers the time after they came to the States but may be of interest to you. I did find the surname in the eastern USA and in the Midwest, Illinois, not far from where my ancestors lived. But so far no link has been established to the others in this country.

I am interested in your connection to this family.

    Thanks very much,

    JD

  • Aine,

Not sure if you are still doing this. My ancestors James Cassidy and his wife Ann Sillery as well as James Carolan and Ann  were from Nobber Civil Parish I am not sure which townlands though. I believe that the Cassidys were from College and the Carolans were from Nobber. The immigrats were John Carolan and Elizabeth Cassidy, his wife. They immigrated in 1859 to Phildadelphia Pa. then went down to New Castle De.

Any newspaper exposure would be welcome. I'll pay any fees incurred.

    Thanks
