On the birth certificate of the 1st daughter ogmy 2nd great grandmother Mary Kelly's it was stated that she was born in Munster Haven. My family have been searching unsuccessfully for this place for many years and today I came across the placename Monasterevin and I am wondering if anybody can tell me if a person with an Irish accent said that name would it sound like Munster Haven.
The story as we know it is that Mary Kelly was at the docks to farewell her friend to Australia but the friend really wanted to stay and marry her fiance so Mary took the ticket and came in place of her friend. She was met in Melbourne by the doctor from St Kilda for whom Mary was going to be governess to his Downs Syndrome daughter.
I am convinced that I have now found Mary's original home place so now I would be looking for her parents Richard and Bridgid Kelly(nee Quinn).
Does anybody have an opinion on the Munster Haven issue please?
Thanks

hi, Monasterevin does indeed sound like munster haven so i'm sure this must be the town and i'm from Monasterevin and i don't know of any other place sounding similar.
Kelly is a very popular name here so it's likely your ancestor was from here. Hope this helps.
Try looking on the 1901 and 1911 census online or contact the local parish church in Monasterevin.

Hi brrday, Thank you for replying. Are you able to tell me how many Catholic Churches there are in Monasterevin and if any of those are ones that would have been there about 1850? Is there a local Family history Library which I could contact re BDMs from early to mid 1800's.
Thanks.

one catholic church called St. Peters and Pauls church.
Fr. Merrigan is the current head there. You can contact his office el: 045-525346 for more information as churches usually hold more information that any other offices. People were very religious back then and always got their children christened regardless of wheather they registered the birth or not.
Indeed my own granmother was never registered as born so she doesn't exist in theory and apart from her baptism cert. she would have no proof.
also, there is a secondary school here called St. Pauls and the principle is a local historain. His name is Con Henry.
You can contact the school on stpaulssec@eircom.net but pls bear in mind that it's holiday season now until sept.
Hope this helps

Thank you so much for your generosity and help.
I will contact Fr Merrigan and later the school. If you are after records in Australia I might be able to help you.

You're welcome, happy to help. And thanks very much but I don't have any old, unknown relatives in Australia.
Hope you find what you're looking for. Fr Liam Merrigan is a lovely man and i'm sure he'll be able to help or point you in the right direction anyways. Best of luck with you're search.
Monasterevin is still only a small town so i imagine prior to 1900 it would have been a very small town indeed.
Although Cafferys brewery existed in Monasterevin and was once one of the largest breweries in europe i believe.
also, there was a large engineering company in town called Holmes engineering.
There's also an old monastery which was once the home of count john mccormick and which is now a care home for disabled people run by the sister of mercy (nuns). It employs 120 at present.
Another place that would have exsisted years ago is "the hulk", a boys orphange. The building still exists today but remains unused as some say its haunted from the abuse that went on inside its walls.
There's a canal and river flowing through Monasterevin and this was used by the brewery and other industries to transport their products to dublin and elsewhere. there's a huge mill just outside called "ballykelly mill" which could have provided more jobs and then there's the bord na mona (turf board) in quinnsboro (3 miles outside the town) where more people work.
Prehaps your relative or her relative held jobs in once of these places. I'm not sure of the date of when they were founded, existed or ceased to exist but maybe a little more research could discover more.

Hi Rettanne
I was recently researching the area my family came from for an upcoming trip to Ireland in 2015 and came across this post with the details of the same ancestor! It appears that we both have the ancestor, Mary Kelly. She is my grandmother's grandmother! It was an absolute delight to see that someone else had worked out that Munster Haven was, in actual fact, Monasterevin. I would love to be able to connect and find out any information you may have.
Thank you and I look forward to talking soon.
