Hello, I am trying to locate where my 2 times great grandfather's parents were from in Ireland. My Great-Great Grandfather was James Storey b. abt. 1853 in Canada. He may have a sister Ellen who was also born in Canada (1852) and perhaps a sister Mary born in Ireland. Anyway, James' father was Hugh Storey and his mother's name was Mary - Both were born in Ireland between 1825-1832. I found a birth record for Hugh Storey born in Ireland in 1832, Clones, Monaghan, Ireland. I am trying to figure out/confirm if this Hugh Storey is my 3 times great grandfather and to locate any other information about the family. The birth record listed Hugh's father as Thomas Storey and his mother as Margaret Cole. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

If you have any information, please email me at karlenemurray@yahoo.com or saaski90@hotmail.com

  • Hi Karlene,

Do you know much about their emigration? Dates, the reason why they left, etc.? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. Liverpool, etc....), this could be a good place to find more information.

You could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38): Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at. The Tithe Applotment List might be of use to you, or at least interesting for you. These lists constitute the only nationwide survey for the period, and are valuable because the heaviest burden of the tithes to the Established Church, the Church of Ireland, fell on the poorest, for whom few other records survive. The information in the Tithes is quite basic, typically consisting of townland name, landholder's name, area of land and tithes payable. Many Books also record the landlord's name and an assessment of the economic productivity of the land. The tax payable was based on the average price of wheat and oats over the seven years up to 1823, and was levied at a different rate depending on the quality of land. For Parishes where the registers do not begin until after 1850, this information can be useful, as they are often the only surviving early records. They can provide valuable circumstantial evidence, especially where a holding passed from father to son in the period between the Tithe survey and Griffith's Valuation.

Church records may be of use to you.Church of Ireland parish registers for the period up to 1870 are public records. Registers are available for about one third of the parishes, however many were destroyed in the Public Records Office in Dublin in 1922. Most are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. A list of all surviving registers is available in the National Archives. http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/. Presbyterian registers are held in three main locations: in local custody, in the Public Records of Northern Ireland (PRONI) http://www.proni.gov.uk/ and at the Presbyterian Historical Society in Belfast. PRONI has microfilm copies of almost all registers in Northern Ireland and also lists of records held by the Presbyterian Historical Society. For the rest of Ireland, almost all records are in local custody. It can difficult to locate these as many congregations in the South have moved, amalgamated, or simply disappeared over the last sixty years. Some Catholic records are held in the National Library of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/parish-records-marriage-licences/ and others are held locally. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish offices for more assistance.

I wish you the best of luck with your search.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

  • Hi Karlene,

I cannot find any record that fits in emigration records, his exact birth date is 16th October 1832, he also had a brother Thomas born 22nd January 1836. Where did you find the information that the parents were Thomas and Margaret?

James was born in Canada 1853, where did he marry and die?

  • Hello

I found a Ireland birth record on familysearch.org for Hugh that lists his birthday as October 16, 1832 and lists his parents as Thomas Storey and Margt Cole as his mother. I also found birth records for John and Jane,

I am just trying to confirm that this Hugh is the right Hugh. I don't want to follow/research the wrong individual. As I mentioned, I know that my great grandmother was Elizabeth Story born in Attleboro Massachusetts and that her father was James Storey who was born in Canada in 1853. James' father was Hugh who was from Ireland.

James Married Elizabeth Mcguire on June 11, 1874 in Attleboro, Massachusetts. Thier first child was born in 1875 in Rhode Island (Mary Storey). They had five other children Frederic L. Storey born Jan 1878 and died April 1878 - Elizabeth Jane Storey b. 1880 d. 1938 - Leander b. 1881 died between 1917 and 1920 - Rosannah Storey b. April 1885 - Helen (Ellen) b. 1888. (Mary and Rosannah were both born in Rhode Island and the others were born in Massachusetts.

So, do you know if the Hugh Storey born in 1832 did in fact travel to Canada and did he have a child named James who was born in Canada in 1853. I think James also had a sister Ellen who was born in Canada in 1852. Looks like she married a  man with the last name Nichols. Ellen died in 1878 at the age of 26 during child birth.

Are you researching Hugh Storey too? If so, how are you related?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Karlene

  • Hi Brendan,

It has been a while. I was reviewing my old messages as I continue to research the Hugh Storey family and I came across the information you sent me. Any new information? Are you researching this family too, or were you just giving me a helping hand?

    Thanks

  • Hi Brendan,

We spoke a while back about my 2x great grandfather James Storey born 1853 in Chambly, Canada and his father Hugh Storey born in Ireland about 1832. You had asked me where in Canada James was born and it was Chambly. You also asked when he married and when he died? Well, he was married June 11, 1874 in Attleboro, Massachusetts (United States) and he died on March 24, 1900 of pneumonia in Rhode Island. I found a naturalization record and that indicated that James came to the United States in 1866 at the age of 12, but I don't know with who or why. I have also confirmed that his father's name was Hugh Storey and that his mother's name was Mary from the marriage record. unfortuantely, I can't find a birth record or any other information that can explain why James was born in Canada or more about his parents. If you have any other thoughts, new thoughts, or have come acorss any information that you think would be helpful to me in my research,  would really appreciate it.

    Thank You

    Hope all has been well.
