I think I have the correct family, but am searching for confirmation of some kind.

My grt grandmother was Elizabeth Lawlor/Lalor born in Lais/Queens around 1852-1855.  She married a John Mullin (Roscommon) in Chicago, Illinois, USA in 1872. And died in Chicago in 1926.  In 1880 US census her brother, Christopher, born about 1845 was living with the Mullin family.

One of Elizabeth's children's godparents were a William and margaret Whelan.  Through censuses and US records I found that Margaret's maiden name was Lawlor, so am assuming she is a sister of Elizabeth.  I found a marriage record in Portarlington, Laois for a William Whelan and margaret Lawlor in 1869.  By 1872 the family I think is them are in Chicago.  Margaret's death record shows her parents as Wm Lawler and helen Byrd

Based on this the above info, I think the parents are Denis lawlor and Ellen Bird.  At least from the info I have the names and dates seem to fit.

I am looking for anything that might confirm that all of my above assumptions are correct.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Lawlors had 9 children

    Essey              1844

    Christopher    1845

    Eliza                 1848

    Margaret          1850

    Patrick              1861

    James              1853

    John                 1855

    Bridget             1858

    Ellen                 1863

Denis was probably born in Mountmellick near Portarlington in 1821  and Ellen Bird was probably born in County Carlow as there is no record of their marriage in Laois

  • Brendan,

Thank you for this information.  I have most of the children's names, but I hadn't seen Essey.

Did you find something that makes you think the Ellen Bird was from County Carlow?  A marriage or a birth/baptismal  record?

On Griffiths there are some Birds in Clonagher (sp?)parish in Laois.  I thought that was a possiblity.

Are you in Ireland?  Any relation to this family?  Any suggestion what I can do next to find out more about the family?

Thanks for your input.  It got me looking again and thinking in a different way/area.

Always good to get other people's input.
