Is this the family ? http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Galway/Mount_Bellew/Marlay/468624/

I have baptismal records up to 1900s The mother there was Margaret Geraghty

Let me know if this is the correct family

I cannot locate Hill House in Moylough The following are the townlands of the parish in the 1850s http://places.galwaylibrary.ie/asp/parish.asp?id=28106

  • Martin,

Thanks for trying but my Grandfather Peter would have been much older. In addition, he would have moved to New York by then since my father was born there in 1912. (They moved back to Galway in about 1916).

  • Martin,

The house is still there and located as per attached map. Not sure what it was called in 1850 but I beieve that both John Higgins and Martin Higgins were ancestors.

  • Hi Wiliam

Just seen your message on Higgins from Moylough. Was wondering if any of your ancestors were connected to Higgins from Springlawn between, Moylough and Mountbellew. My great gran mother was Bridget Higgins(known as Muddy) She married a John Kelly and lived in Kinclare in Caltra.

  • Is it Glebe House ?

That is presently owned by the Colleran family I think

What info do you want to find out ? You enquired about baptismal and church records - are they for the period 1900-1960 or the 1800s ?

Did all the family leave the area or are you trying to track some relatives who may still be there?

  • Hope this gets to you

I was just in a cousin's house and her mother's great aunt married a Peter Higgins from the Hill House in Moylough She was a  Higgins from Lavally I am presuming this is your family

The Hill House is a former herder's house I am told which is on the junction with the Clonberne Rd

  • Hi Martin,

Sorry for the delay- family matters precluded me from doing any more genealogy for a while. The Collerans were our neighbours back in the 40's adn 50's.

  • Hello, Would anyone happen to have information about Nannie Higgins (aka, I believe, Anne Higgins).

Nannie (or Anne) is my great, great grandmother and was married to Edward Joseph Rafter, my great, great grandfather.

Edward Joseph Rafter was born in Maylough on 1st April 1843 to John Rafter and his wife (whose name I am also seeking).

    Thank you.

  • William,

I think I might be a relative you are looking for.  Just found this website through a recent contact and your post lined up exactly with my family research.  My grandmother was Mary Ellen Higgins born in 1910 in NYC to Peter and Ellen Higgins.  I only knew they were from Galway and the family moved back to Ireland around 1916.  My grandmother sailed back to Boston when she was 16 and made her way to NYC where she met my grandfather.  Would love to talk more and see if we are indeed related and share our histories!
