My great grandparents, Laurence Ryan and Johanna  Roche were married in the Chapel of Doon in February 1875. They were living in Commonealine. They had three children in Ireland, then came to New York.

  • Hi Mary,

Ryan & Roche are quite common names in Limerick. You could try posting as much information as you can regarding your relatives. The more information you post, the more likely oit is that one of our volunteers can assist or advise you.

Do you know much about their emigration? Dates, the reason why they left, etc.? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. Liverpool), this could be a good place to find more information, and perhaps even find out an exact place of origin.

What sources have you tried...? You could try listing those as well, so others can further your search.

    All the best.

  • Lawrence Ryan was the son of Francis Ryan and Margaret Crowe. He was born in 1849 and baptized in the parish of Kilcommon. Johanna Roche was the daughter of Michael Roche and Mary Wallace. She was also baptized in the parish of Kilcommon in 1858. She and her family came to the U.S. in 1861, but her father died a few days later and she and her mother returned to Ireland. At the time of their marriage Lawrence was a laborer and Johanna a servant. The both lived in Commonealine.

Their first two children, Margaret (born in Commonealine) and Mike (born in Glengar) were baptized in Doon parish. The third child, Mary, was born in Thurles in 1880. When she was a year old they came to New York. The rest of the children were born in NY.

All of Johanna's siblings stayed in New York after their father's death.  I don't know happened to Lawrence's siblings. I only know the names of two of them: John and Johanna.

I have done a lot of research and have Irish birth records and church records from RootsIreland. The family didn't live in Limerick, as far as I can tell, but where if the parish of Doon, at least at the time of the Ryan/Roche marriage.
