The whole Martin family was gone from Garranne, Kilmalkedar by the time the Griffiths Valuation was done appx 1851. Catherine Martin my Great Great Grandmother emigrated with her brothers and sisters thru Quebec. She found her husband Morris ... the rest ended up in Marshall, Calhoun, Michigan and were on the census there 1860, 1870, and owned land in the town. The two brothers James and John and sister Eliza Thomas all had children some born in Ireland, some in America. I have not been able to locate any of the Martins by the end of the 1800s.

Hi,
I've forwarded your request to a volunteer who may be able to assist or advise you.
All the best.

Did this Martin family extend out to Grand Rapids too? My ggg grandfather was John Martin of Ireland. Born in Ireland around 1813 and died in Grand Rapids in 1882. His wife was Mary Pendergrass of Marne. Her father was from Kilkenny. John's parent's were John and Bridget Martin. I'm wondering if his father John and James were brothers, both born around the same time, 1790.

Hi,
It's possible John Martin died in Grand Rapids, but lived in Marshall while in the U.S.
His wife was Helen/Ellen FitzGerald.
John's parents were James Martin and Catherine Moriarty. John did have a brother James.
thier father James had a brother John! ...all from west of Dingle.

It does look like there was a John and Bridget Martin sponsoring another Bridget Martin's baptism. My guess is that this was James' brother John and his wife:
Bridget Martin
As per the Killarney Heritage Center; Bridget, was baptised on the 19/02/1814, the sponsors wer John Martin and Bridget Martin, Rev. E Aherne officiatedDo you know what they did as professions? Also, do you know if there's been Y-DNA testing done on our Martin line? I would like to confirm if we come from the Irish Type III lineage of the Milesians from northern Spain, and subsequently related to the distant kings of Munster.

Well according to an 1880 census record, my John Martin resided in Grand Rapids. DOB says 1813, but he ended up passing away two years later in 1882. He and his wife, Mary Pendergrass, had several children: Bridget, Mary,Thomas, Margaret, Ellen,Jane,John, Patrick, and Elisabeth. Mary's parents had emigrated to Talmadge, and we're living there in 1860. She died on 17 September 1917 in Grand Rapids. Their son, Thomas, was my gg grandfather. He married Julia Moran of Algoma.
What makes me think that I have an obvious connection to your Martin's is that according to churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie, Julia's parents Denis and Mary Roche were married in Caherdaniel, Kerry Co on 15 February 1846, and Denis was born in Ballydavid, Kerry Co, just west of Dingle on 19 February 1822. It seems the families knew each other. I'm wondering if John of Grand Rapids was a nephew to James if James had a brother named John. Both would've been born around 1790. Do you know if he did? And you wouldn't know their parent's names?
-
I think I come from James's brother (the 1790 James), John, west of Dingle. Ballydavid is just a few miles west of Dingle.

This is exciting! I just found my ggg grandfather's baptismal record! John's father actually was Thomas Martin, probably another brother of James and John. I would appreciate you sending me what you have, my email is EzraJ.Kubas@Yahoo.com.

Wow both John Martin's were born in 1813, the son of Thomas one, and the son of John. Could Thomas be another brother of James? I do know that my John Martin was living in Michigan in 1860 according the the census, and he was born in Ireland. He was living with his wife and kids and her parents and family in 1860. Her father was Patrick Prendergast, a shipbuilder from Kilkenny. His family were one of the founding families of Berlin, an Irish farming community. In 1917 it was changed to Marne after we lost so many casualties at the Battle of the Marne.
Do know anymore information on your 1813 John as far as place of birth and where he resided in 1860?

Children of the foxes, Clan MartinThe Tribe of Mairtine was definitely Proto-Celtic in origin, and among the ancient tribes wintering in Spain during the last Ice Age. They were part of the early Pictish, Celtic and Gaelic movements into the western Europe and the British Isles.
The Tribe of Mairtine landed in Ireland roughly 2000 years ago near the Dingle Peninsula and established themselves in the areas of Kerry, Cork, and later in Tipperary. The Book of Munster associates the Mairtine with the Tribes of the Erainn, Benntraige, Ulaidhe, and the E?ghanacht. Associated is a key word, as the deep clade DNA signatures of all the tribes are slightly different.
The Mairtine began a 1000 year migrational track across Ireland to the Northeast and eventually occupied what we now know as Northern Ireland (Ulster) and Western Scotland (Argyll) and were an integral part of the Dal Riada Kingdom.
The Dal Riadic Clan is named as MacMairtin, and eventually anglicized to MacMartin and finally Martin. Later migrations spread up the Great Glen and Clan MacMartin established themselves primarily around Loch Lochy to Stirling, Scotland, with others scattered throughout Scotland.

Has anyone ever done a Y-DNA test on our Martin's to see which subclade they originate? Also a distant cousin recently emailed me from Dublin and said that there's belief that the Martin's were once O'Connor's. The O'Connor's are supposed to descend from a kingly or chieftain line.

Hi Ezra,
Would a YDNA test work for this situation? See attached pedigree for my male 2nd cousin.
Mary aka waterlilys@aol.com

Well it would certainly pinpoint whether we are M222 and descend from the kings of Connaught and Niall of the Nine Hostages, or if we come from several of the subclades from Munster and their kingly lines.

Ezra - sorry for my being dense - If I talked my second cousin into doing a Y- DNA test would it answer your question about which subclade the Martin's originate?
