My ancestors were James Henry Boyd (b.1805) and Letitia Kerrigan (b.1814) from the Parish of Fuerty, County Roscommon. They settled in Taunton, Massachusetts. I believe that James's father was Peter Boyd (b. 1775), but have no information beyond that.  There are still Boyd family members living in Fuerty, and some of my relatives have traveled to Ireland and visited with them. They don't know how we are connected, other than a picture of my great-grandfather, who was James and Letitia's son William, that was taken in the late 1800's in front of a cottage that is still on their property.

Have you tried  checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

    or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

  • I believe I can help you there. My name is Joann Hilton. My mothers Maiden name is Boyd. She is the daughter of John Boyd, born in Taunting, Massachusetts (the years I'm not sure of...but my mother is now 65, so we can estimate til I ask her). She has been tracing her family line, and has traced her Boyd family back to "Rosecommon". I believe she has gone as far back as the late 1700's. It appears our ancestors were considered "prominent" in that time, and a few were doctors. My mother has so much information, I can provide you with the genealogy she has to date. My email is : robbitsjojo@AOL.com. feel free to inbox me and we can find a way to get the info passed along. By the way.. after Taunting, Massachusetts the family settled in Warwick, Rhode Island, USA (approx a half hour drive from taunting, MA). We have all lived in Rhode Island ever since. There are quite a few Boyd dependents here. Many carrying on the name.... :))

  • Good day all! I know this is a relatively old thread... but it caught my attention for it's connections in the Taunton, MA line...  my name is Joe Cunio... my maternal grandmother was Louise Josephine Boyd (McShane), daughter of Michael Joseph, of Michael, of James and Letitia Kerrigan. As with dorielawson, I was able to validate back only to James and Letitia (Kerrigan)... I can't seem to find anything online about Peter (or further back)... has anyone found any viable leads? Any info, direction, would be greatly appreciated...

I've gone down most of the streams provided by cynoconnor, (most appreciated), but haven't embraced www.roscommonroots.com yet... want to exhaust all available resources before "investing" in a possible dead end...

    Cheers1

  • I am very interested in hearing more about Peter Boyd from Fuerty. My ggf was James Boyd, born 1807 in Creemully, Fuerty. His wife was Letitia Kerrigan. They arrived in the US in about 1867 and settled in Taunton. They have many descendants who are just starting to reconnect thanks to internet geneology sires! I found a mention of a Peter Boyd who may have been James's brother?

  • Dorie,

We are definately related.  I have pictures of James and Letitia, as well as my grandfather Peter and his father,I think. (who was also named Peter).  James and Letitia were my great Aunt and Uncle, if I have this right.  My father's name was Milton Boyd, who was a renowned FBI agent in the 30's and 40's (among other things, he investigated the Charles Lindburgh (of aviation fame) kidnapping and was the one who arrested Bruno Hauptman, who kidnapped Lindburg's 2 year old son).   I'm at vanceb90@mail.com.  I can attach pictures there.  Going to Ireland in May and will try to find the farm in Fuerty.

  •

James and Lettitia Boyde  lived  in a small  rural village of  no more than 20 houses, on the then vast estate held by the Burkes of Glinsk castle.

When the Burke family became insolvent , the entire estate was offered for sale , and unfortunately  for the Boydes and thousands of the other tenants , the new owner Alan Pollock decided to replace his tenants wit cattle ,sheep and horses.

James and Lettitia  together with their  six children were forced onto the roadside, forever leaving their beloved Ballinahattina  forever.....and left with no other altrnative , but to board the dreaded emigrant ship , in the hope of providing a better life for his six children in the new world.

  • @lancer1945 @dorielawson Vance and Dorie, I've been away from this board way too long! this is brilliant information!

The intel I was able to map for James and Letitia look like this:

    James - b.May 10, 1805 (County Roscommon Townland Castlecoote, Parrish Fuerty, Ireland) - d.Oct. 1, 1888(Taunton, MA) - * GreatGreatGreatGrandfather

    >  Letitia Kerrigan Boyd (1814 - 1869)* - wife
      >  Michael Boyd (1838 - 1901)* < MY great great grand father>
      >  Peter F Boyd (1841 - 1904)*
      >  Fanny Boyd (1847 - 1875)*
      >  Lucy Boyd Kingston (1855 - 1932)*
      >  Annie E Boyd Murphy (1860 - 1916)*

Do these map to your roots?  Michael is my GGgF.

I'm at joecunio@gmail.com if I can be of assistance!

    Thank you all!

  • Thanks to all who have posted here. I've been away from this board for way too long. Lots of great jnformation.

My ancestors, James and Letitia, were from Creemully, Aghagad Beg, in Castlecoote, Fuerty. James was born in 1805. I am related to Liam Boyd, and had the pleasure of meeting all the Boyds in Creemully a few years ago. We could not figure out how who our common ancestor is, however. It would be great to trace that back.

I'm also wondering about the James and Letitia in Tim Duke's message. Are they the same ones I wonder? Glinsk castle is so close by, but Griffiths Valuation lists  James Boyd in Creemully at the right time with Coote as his landlord. Did they perhaps move to Ballinhatina before emigrating? Or perhaps they are related with coincidentally the same names? Lots of questions!

  • I have Boyd relatives from Roscommon County who emigrated to the United States and settled in southwestern Ohio.  It does not appear that we are immediate members of the James and Letitia Boyd family but hopeful that some link might be made.

Thomae (Thomas) Boyd (1836 - 1902) married to Anna Killalea (1840 - 1921).    Their first three children, all sons, were born in Ireland and baptised in Killukin, Roscommon, Ireland.  Joannem Boyd 1857   Michael Boyd  1859     Thomam Boyd 1861

I believe that GGGF Thomae Boyd emigrated around 1862 and then GGGM Anna Killalea Boyd arrived in 1864 with their three sons.  My GGM, Anna E. Boyd was the first child born in Ohio, USA in 1868 followed by four more children all born in Ohio.

Thomae Boyd was the third child of parents Hugonis Boyd and Annae Barret.  Siblings:  Eleanoram, Patritium, Mariam, Joannem, Hugonem, and Annam.   Baptisms may have been in Killucan and Ballinameen, Roscommon County.

Anna Killalea Boyd was lst child of Patri Killalea and Winefride Spallen.    Siblings  Jacobus, and Mariam.  Baptisms may have been in Boyle, Roscommon County.

Records indicate the Patri (Petrus) Killalea married Winefrida Spallan on 26 Feb 1838 in Elphin Diocese, Roscommon County, witnesses  Johanne Hunt and Alicia Spallan.

Please join the civil parish of Killukin (Boyle) and post a copy of this message there. I can show you where your Boyds came from (between Croghan village and Carrick on Shannon).

  • Hello!

James and Letitia Boyd were my 3rd great-grandparents. They had a son, Michael, who married Bridget Curtain, and had a son, John J. Boyd, who married Catherine Foran. John J. and Catherine were my paternal grandfather Walter Boyd's parents. I believe he had five siblings, Mary C., Rev. Harold, Rev. JB, Lester and Leo. I found most of this written in a bible owned by my late uncle Joe (son of Walter T. and Agnes McVay.)

Would love to know more about Peter Boyd and Mary. Thanks for all of the information already provided here!

Ali - we are closely related. My grandfather Leo Curtin Boyd was your grandfathers brother. I recall their sister Mary C Boyd (May) well. I’d be very interested to learn more about the information contained in the Bible notes. My email is below.     Re: Peter and Mary, I believe the best we can do is know their names by way of James H  Boyd’s death notice, and then make the assumption that the Peter Boyd listed in Creemully in the 1825 Tithes Applotment list is he. I haven’t seen anything beyond that.
