Timothy Earley, born about 1826-1830 in County Clare, immigrated to USA about 1849 (information about birthplace and immigration taken from his 1902 Iowa, USA obituary).  He is found in USA census records with surname Earley, Early, Hearley, and Hawley.  He died as Timothy Earley, also known as Timothy Hawley.  His living descendants all use surname Hawley.  USA census records place him in Wisconsin and Iowa.  I have no information on parents or siblings.  He named his 6 boys (in order of birth): John R, Daniel [died shortly after birth], Michael H, Timothy Cornelius, William James, and Daniel Frank E.  I appreciate any information or possible connections.  Judy Orr Hawley

  • Hi Judy:

Thanks for your query.  Have you looked at the Clare county Library website?  It's www.clarecountylibrary.ie.  they have a terrific genealogy section.  It would be worth your while to check out the Griffith's Valuation and the Tithe Applotment Books by surname.  They might help you to narrow down the village where your ancestors came from.  If you find anything there, you can start tracing forward.

Best of luck to you in your research.  Please let me know how you get on and let me know if I can be of further assistance.

  • Jane-- thank you so much for responding and your offer to help.  I very much appreciate it.

Argh!  I have searched and searched through the Clare County Library, but I can't find anything for Timothy Earley/Early, but I have found a couple of potential leads.

Please help: I appreciate knowing if "Earley" could have been spelled differently in his native language.  Please provide suggestions.  I have tried my meager American spellings: Earley, Early, Earle, Earles, Earls, Haely, Haley, Haily, Hawley, Hayley, Healy, Hearley, Hearly, Healey, Houley, Holly, Howley, Hurley, Hurly.  Suggestions would be appreciated!

Please help:  Is the name "Timothy" also exchanged for another name/nickname, such as "Thomas".  I don't know and I am hoping you might shed some light on this.  I found some with surname "Earls", but no "John Earls", but did find "Thomas Earls" so that makes me ask the question of whether the names Thomas and Timothy are interchangeable.

Please help: If Timothy was born about 1826-1830 and he immigrated in 1849, do you think he would be old enough to be listed in the Tithe Applotment book 1820's-1840's?  I think not, so I wonder if I am looking for his father.  I don't know his name, but if I use traditional naming conventions, then the first son is named after the father's father and that name is John.  The closest I found to John Earley was "John Earles" in 1833 in Ballymooris townland, Kilfintinan parish.  In the notes section for John Earles, it states "John Hicky & John Earles".  What does that mean?

    Thanks for your assistance-- Judy

  • Hi Judy:

My apologies for not getting back to you sooner.  I have read your most recent comment.  The parish that you are referring to is part of the Cratloe parish.  I know of someone in Clonlara and she might be able to assist.  However, in relation to your two questions, the two names means that those two were the tenants together on the land (or part of).  It could also mean that they may have been related.  That is not a definite assumption, but something to keep in mind.  I looked through Kilfintanin parish on your behalf and I see that the Earles name appears there most frequenty.  That might be the best place to start for the moment.

Im not sure when the parish records start, but I will try to find out and see if there might be any clues there for you.  Dd you take a look at the Clare county Library website under the Kilfintanin parish name?  There has been a number of donations of material relating to those who emigrated from there.  Just a thought.

The best of luck on your search and if I come across anything, I will let you know.

    Kind regards,

    Jane
