Coming to Tiernascragh

Dear Audrey,

Perhaps you did not pick that up from my talk last night at the National Library - but Tiernascragh. Co Galway is my native parish.  When you return in the Spring, let me know, and I'd be happy to visit with you if you would welcome some company!   I was not aware of the Hinch name in the townland of Longford, but the land and local people are all very familiar to me.

Hi Audrey,

Your grandfathers occupation was land steward in Longford so he must have worked on the Longford Estate now Gibson and Nigel Stoddard's farm. Initially it was in the ownership of the Kenny family. John's wife was born in India as we can see from the census returns. I suspect that you are aware of all of this. It seems that they lived in Carlow for a time and later Limerick befiore coming to Galway. it would be interesting to follow them. Perhaps he always worked as a steward so the following the Landed Estates may be where you will find him. The various ages and places of birth of their children alerts us to this. Happy searching. The extract below is from the 1901 census.  Some of the children are noted as scholars so the Tiranascragh Roll books should be of assistance if they are old enough.

First, may I apologise for getting your name wrong in my first post! I rushed home from the NLI and dived straight into  Ireland Reaching Out. I didn't stop to double check...

I think that's amazing that you're from Tiernascragh - what serendipity. I shall certainly take you up on your kind offer, and look forward to it.

When I saw the information on IRO about the Longford estate, I wondered if my great-grandfather had indeed worked there. It was great to have a reply from the local group suggesting the school rolls and Landed Estates papers as possible sources of information.

I'm busy studying for a Masters at the moment, but would be interested in being involved in IRO when I finish next summer.

You know, I think that it is a very exciting time to be in Ireland. I love the place anyway, but It feels as though changes are happening - let's see.

Thank you so much for replying! Yes, I already have the census details on the Hinches but I didn't know about the Schools Rolls or the Landed Estates website. What a great resource the latter is. As well as information on Longford, I've also found information on another branch of the family in Waterford. :)

The Hinches moved on from Tiernascragh and were in Clooney, in Co Clare in 1911. I wonder did they move after Major Longbourne sold the house...

Gosh, imagine knowing who my great-grandfather's boss was!

Dear Mike,

Well, Spring has turned into Autumn, but I'm finally making it to the West! I'm spending a week in Clifden with a friend, from 21-28 Sept. En route, we'll detour via Tiernascragh next Saturday. I hope to be there around 12.30 p.m.

Given how successful Ireland XO has become, I imagine that you are quite busy! Thank you again for your kind offer to show me around, but if you are not free, I'll certainly contact the local XO'ers to meet up.
