My Grandfather, John Sheridan, was the son of Bridget McLaughlin Sheridan (1831-19--) and Patrick Sheridan (1823-1905) a farmer and land owner in the townland of Kiltrone, parish of Robeen, barony of Kilmaine outside of Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo. He emigrated to the United States, settling in Cambridge, Ma., in 1891.

  • My great-grandfather was Patrick Sheridan, born about 1828 and died 2/8/1865, Shop St., Westport, Co. Mayo.  He married Honora Gibbons (born Abt. 1834) on 2/20/1855 in Aghagower Parish, Co. Mayo.  After Patrick died, his wife Honora and daughter Delia Agnes Sheridan went to the United States (New York).   I believe Patrick and Honora had 4 other children.....I cannot find where Patrick and the other four children were buried.  I do not know if Patrick and Honora were born in Co. Mayo or not.  I plan to come to Westport the end of May or first week of June this year in search of any information on the Sheridan/Gibbons family.

I also have an obituary for a Miss Katie McGreal who died December 23, 1922 at her residence, the Octagon, Westport....states that she was a member of the late Dominick McGreal and grand-daughter of John McGreal, New Forrest Lodge, Westport, niece of the late Patrick Sheridan, P.P., Mayo Abbey and the late Dr. Patrick McGreal of Westport and Dr. Thomas McGreal, Castlebar.  I believe Katie McGreal is also related to me (through the Sheridan side).

I have spent countless hours researching on the internet for any information on any of these families to no avail.  The only information I have gotten is the marriage date/location of Patrick Sheridan/Honora Gibbons....no information on their families.

If anyone can help me in my search, I would appreciate it.  I am sure they all were Roman Catholic.  Would I be able to get any information from the church in Westport? (is there more than one Catholic church there?).  Is there a Historical Society in Westport that would have any information?

    Thank you for your help!!

  • I cannot help you specifically but I have a coincidence of the names of Gibbons and Sheridans you mentioned residing in Westport.

I have family of Sheridans from Westport.  Anthony Sheridan was born in 1845 in Kinuary, Ballintober to Patrick Sheridan and Catherine Butler.  Anthony Sheridan married my great great grandmothers' sister, Bridget Butler in 1871.  They lived on Mill Street in Westport town.  They raised my great grandmother Delia Tonra (Bridget Agnes Tonra/Toner) born 1885.  Before Delia immigrated to the US in abt 1904, she was a servant for the family of John and Honora Gibbons on Mill Street.

Just passing this info on to you as I thought it a coincidence.

best of luck in your search,  if i see anything that can help i will pass it on to you
